SOUTH BOSTON, Mass. – Normally when someone puts in a long day of work, the first thing on his or her mind is to go home and get some rest. For Celtics forward Jeff Green, however, there was only one place he wanted to be after practice Tuesday evening – at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center to support Community Servings.

Since its founding in 1989, Community Servings has provided free, nutritious home-style meals to more than 1,300 individuals that are homebound due to acute, life-threatening diseases each year. Every November, Community Servings hosts their Pie in the Sky event in an effort to raise funds for a great cause. Nearly 15,000 pies are donated from some of Boston’s best restaurants, bakeries, caterers and hotels and volunteers sell them to families, friends and colleagues to help support Community Servings’ mission. Pie in the Sky has raised $6 million dollars since its inception 20 years ago.

Green entered the Convention Center to help fellow volunteers from TD Bank load pies into delivery trucks as well as create gift bags.

“Community Servings is a great organization,” said Green. “They’ve helped so many families and continue to do so. I’m just happy to be here and support their wonderful cause.”

After helping to load pies and create gift bags, Green took time to meet with a family who had been dealing with illness. He then learned that it was the son’s 17th birthday.

“I can’t leave here without giving you a present for your birthday,” stated Green. “I think I may have a surprise for you!”

Moments later, Green presented the youth with a signed pair of his game-worn sneakers.

“This is more than just a gift,” said the youth. “This is a memory I will never forget.”

Following his meet-and-greet with the family, Green personally thanked all of the TD Bank volunteers who had been there since early in the afternoon.

“We are incredibly grateful for the Celtics and Jeff Green’s support of our organization and mission,” said David B. Waters, CEO of Community Servings. “Our Pie in the Sky fundraiser has allowed thousands of residents from across the state to come together as a community to provide meals of hope to our critically ill neighbors during the holiday season and we couldn’t be more thrilled to have the Celtics and TD Bank be a part of this very special event.”
