Game Quotes: Cavaliers at Hawks
(On tonight’s game): “We turned the ball over a few times early on, which you can’t do against this team. One of our keys to this game was to get back in transition. We gave up 23 points in transition, which is way too many. We outrebounded (the Hawks), but they got some key rebounds during the game. Our transition defense was not good tonight. We went to a lot more zone defense tonight. I thought we played a good solid game on the defensive end, forcing (the Hawks) to take a bunch of jump shots. However, they got some key rebounds on some of those shots.”
(On playing shorthanded tonight): “It’s always tough when you’re shorthanded. We found out before the game that CJ (Miles) wasn’t available, and then (Daniel) Gibson got kicked out of the game, which didn’t help. But I told our guys that we have to battle like that the rest of the season. That’s how we have to play. I told them I thought they played as hard as they could play tonight. They were very physical, and if we fight like that every night, we’ll be okay.”
(On his ejection): “I was upset about the shot (where no foul was called), and that’s how I got the first technical. The second one happened when things got a little heated (between me and DeShawn Stevenson), and that was my fault. I let my emotions get the best of me, and that took me out of the ball game. I don’t have any ill will towards (DeShawn).”
(On the fight the team showed throughout the night): “I think guys on this team are real competitors, and we want to win, and we haven’t been winning of late. (The Hawks) were playing very physical tonight, but we don’t back down, and I think that’s the way Coach (Scott) wants us to be. Tonight we played (pretty much like that).”
Hawks Head Coach Larry Drew
(Opening statement): “My message was very simple to our guys this morning prior to shootaround. Playing this Cleveland ball club, not really knowing who they had dressing tonight, the message was very simple – we really had to focus on us tonight, making sure we come out and do the things we’ve been doing pretty much all year. As the season winds down, it’s important that we don’t lose focus. Don’t lose focus defensively, and don’t lose focus of who we have to be every time we step on the floor.”
(On Al Horford and Devin Harris): “It was really good getting Al Horford back tonight, getting him back into the lineup and into a rhythm. He picked up some quick fouls early so his minutes were limited. I thought he finished strong. I thought Devin Harris did a phenomenal job tonight from start to finish. He was very good in attacking the basket. His speed and quickness were there. It seemed like when we got into a little bit of trouble, he came up with some timely plays, whether he got to the basket, made a shot or made a pass.”
(On the upcoming game vs. New York): “It’s going to be a big game for us. It will be a possible playoff matchup. We have to have a good showing.”
(On contributions tonight): “Devin set the tone for us offensively, and led us through the night. That’s what we need at this time of the year – different guys to come in, step up and play big for us.”
(On the physical play tonight): “I thought we kept our composure. I felt like I couldn’t get into the rhythm I wanted to. I just went out and kept playingmy game, and we handled our business.”
(On tonight’s win): “They (the Cavs) were playing real carefree. This is the first time we really had to face a two-three zone all game long. I think we handled it well. We did some good things. We were a little loose playing on the defensive end in the first half. We tightened it up in the second. We were able to get out and get some easy points in that second half.”
(On his night): “I was just trying to be active. I took my time, really didn’t rush anything. I was able to get some offensive rebounds. I was doing whatever it took to try to stay involved and create some momentum.”
