Suns shooting guard Shannon Brown is one half of an extremely talented household. Besides Brown being an NBA high-flyer, his wife, Monica, is a chart-topping singer/songwriter that has sold more than 20 million albums worldwide.

With such incredible access to the world of entertainment, Brown is going to utilize his family connections to host the Woodstar Music Festival from August 17-19 in Chicago, IL. A native of Chicago, Brown will tip off the event with a sponsorship dinner on August 17, followed by concerts on August 18 and 19, a basketball clinic on August 18 and a celebrity basketball game on August 19.

All proceeds will go to the Shannon Brown Foundation, a charitable organization which assists in the social development of young people.

“The event is really for my foundation and for the kids,” Brown said. “(The funds raised) give scholarships, computers, book bags and things like that to give kids a better chance to succeed in life.”

Besides Monica, some of the artists that will be on hand to perform include, Robin Thicke, Dawn Richard, Estelle, Fantasia, Slick Rick, Doug E. Fresh, MC Lyte, Naughty by Nature, Rakim, as well as some up-and-coming local acts.

Through various social media channels, Brown has even encouraged fan participation in the event.

“We picked someone off Twitter to sing the national anthem for the celebrity game,” the Suns shooting guard said. “(There was also an opportunity) for a rap and R&B act to (win a chance) to open up for each day of the concert.”

The celebrity basketball game will include two former Chicago stars that sported Suns uniforms at one time: Alando Tucker and Dee Brown. The contest will also feature local streetball players and names from the entertainment industry.

Former MTV VJ and funnyman Ed Lover will coach opposite of Brown.

“We’re trying to make it a huge annual event that’s for a good cause,” Brown said.
