Posted: Jan. 24, 2013

The Phoenix Suns and Southwest Airlines are encouraging Maricopa County seventh grade students to enter the “Symbol of Freedom” Art and Essay Contest for the chance to win a trip to Washington, D.C. and cheer on the Suns as they take on the Washington Wizards on March 16.

Students interested in participating in the contest are asked to create a piece of original art that depicts what freedom means to them, as well as write an accompanying essay. Submissions must be delivered to the security desk inside the main pavilion at US Airways Center, during normal business hours, no later than 5 p.m. on Friday, February 8.

Ten contest winners will be selected to attend the once-in-a-lifetime trip, which is scheduled for Thursday, March 14 through Sunday, March 17. Each contest winner plus one parent/legal guardian will receive the following:

  • Round-trip airfare on Southwest Airlines to Washington, D.C.
  • Hotel accommodations for a three-night stay in Washington, D.C.
  • Tours of national museums and historic landmarks
  • Tickets to the Phoenix Suns vs. Washington Wizards, in Washington D.C. on March 16

The contest winners will also have their artwork displayed at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport during the month of March.

Students can log onto Suns.com/community-programs to find all contest information. Program collateral has also been mailed to all Maricopa County school principals with seventh grade classrooms. The ten lucky artists who are selected will be notified no later than Friday, February 22.
