Suns Rally From 22 Down to Win in Minnesota
That's the number of points the Suns found themselves down by to the Timberwolves early in Sunday's game.
Nevertheless, fans of the team know that seemingly no lead is insurmountable for the Suns as they battled back to pick up a huge win over the Timberwolves in Minnesota, 127-120 -- their biggest come-from-behind victory of the 2013-14 season .
Minnesota came out firing on all cylinders en route to a 41-27 lead after the first quarter and by 22 at one point in the first half. Still, in spite of the lackluster start, Phoenix finished the game shooting a season-high 57 percent from the floor to overcome Kevin Love's 36 points and 14 rebounds.
The Wolves scored a season-high 73 points in the first half in spite of the Suns shooting over 60 percent from the floor. Turnovers and foul trouble allowed Minnesota to get into their groove.
Slowly but surely, the Suns chipped away at the lead. As Phoenix stormed back to tie the game at 118, Markieff Morris forced a Kevin Love turnover in the paint which led to an Eric Bledsoe fast-break layup. Gerald Green, Bledsoe and P.J. Tucker each hit key free throws in the final minute to pull the Suns to within a half game of eighth-place Memphis in the Western Conference.
"We seem to have these bad starts to the first quarters lately," Hornacek said after the game. "We've had a few of these games. But the guys just never give up. We played horribly in the first half but kind of got going in the second half as our defense got better.
"It's a great thing to know as a coach that they'll never give up."
As Hornacek mentioned, it was their improvement on the defensive end which ultimately led to the win. Phoenix held Minnesota to just 47 points in the third and fourth quarters (after giving up 41 in the first quarter alone). The Suns outscored the Wolves 34-17 in the fourth quarter alone.
The Suns have now won five of their last six games.
It was a back and forth game throughout the second half until a 12-2 run by the Suns in the final minutes to seal the victory.
Bledsoe, Morris, Dragic, Tucker and Green all made significant plays on both ends of the floor during the run for the Suns' 41st victory.
