Al McCoy Honored with Inclusion in Iowa Hall of Pride

Phoenix Suns legend and long-time radio voice, Al McCoy, is now a member of the Iowa Hall of Pride, an attraction in Des Moines, Iowa which honors outstanding Iowans and their life-long accomplishments. McCoy is now featured at the museum as part of an interactive media exhibit.

“I have been very fortunate to be honored with several awards through the years which I appreciate so much, but to be recognized and honored by your home state where you grew up and started your career is something extra special,” said McCoy. “Now to be included in the Iowa Hall of Pride is truly the icing on the cake!”

At McCoy’s media exhibit, visitors have an opportunity to learn more about the “Voice of the Suns” through interactive videos where McCoy speaks to his childhood in Iowa, how he got into radio, and how he ended up with a dream job of working for the Phoenix Suns. Other soundbites highlight McCoy’s piano playing abilities, his role models and best life-memories, and his passion for his home state.

“Al McCoy is an ‘Iowa Icon’ and deserves a place in the Iowa Hall of Pride!” said Jack Lashier, Director of the Iowa Hall of Pride. “After being away from our state for over 60 years, Al still comes back every few years to his hometown of Williams, Iowa to reconnect with the people who helped mold him into the person he is today. This speaks volumes about the type of person Al is. We are honored and so proud to include Al McCoy in the Iowa Hall of Pride. SHAZAM!”

The Iowa native began his broadcasting career at KJFJ Radio in Webster City, IA, and will enter his 44th season of broadcasting Suns basketball when the club tips off its 2015-16 campaign on October 28. McCoy’s career accomplishments garnered him the 18th Annual Curt Gowdy Media Award from the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame during Enshrinement Weekend in September of 2007.

“Suns fans are lucky to have listened to a legend for the last 43 years,” said Suns President, Jason Rowley. “Al is extremely proud of his Iowa roots, and we congratulate him on this well-deserved recognition.”

The Iowa Hall of Pride is a project of the Iowa High School Athletic Association, which honors outstanding Iowans through various displays, as well as all high school activities in the state through a total of 47 interactive, technology-based exhibits. Opened in 1996, the Iowa Hall of Pride has maintained a focus on what is most important to Iowans, their people.
