Now Hiring: Director, Facility Engineering/Maintenance

Phoenix, Arizona’s premier sports and entertainment facility is seeking the ideal candidate for Director, Facility Engineering/Maintenance. The venue hosts approximately 150 ticketed and 400 non-ticketed events per year. Home of the NBA Phoenix Suns, WNBA Phoenix Mercury and AFL Arizona Rattlers we entertain more than 1.5 million guests a year.

This key position requires an aggressive, hands-on professional with five plus years of department-head level facility maintenance and supervision experience. The qualified candidate must have the ability to succeed in a fast paced environment and possess extensive experience in HVAC, energy management systems, preventive maintenance programs, life safety systems, refrigeration, plumbing and electrical, special project management, and the ability to supervise all major trades, including audio/video services. This position requires an individual with a neat and professional appearance, excellent communication skills, forecasting and budgeting experience, and the willingness, since US Airways Center is an event-driven business, to work varying hours including evenings, weekends and holidays.

Responsible, supervisory work involving the operation, maintenance and repair of a variety of electrical, plumbing, heating, air-conditioning, refrigeration and other mechanical equipment of a major entertainment facility. This employee may perform the duties of an engineer and, in addition, is responsible for planning, assisting and supervising plant operations and other maintenance items such as painting, carpentry, seat repair, and welding. Initiative and independent judgment are required in the planning and supervision of all building-related operations and projects.

Essential duties and responsibilities:

  • Develop and institute standard operating procedures, working schedules, record keeping and reporting systems
  • Make regular inspections of all machinery, order changes in working procedures of repairs as needed and order and approve requisitions for necessary subcontractor work, materials, tools and equipment
  • Establish, enforce, and evaluate departmental safety regulations and requirements
  • Ensure all systems operate for maximum efficiency and conservation
  • Knowledge of ice rink refrigeration equipment using a glycol solution
  • Oversee set-up/floor conversion crew
  • Work closely with event managers to ensure smooth-running events
  • Determine staffing levels and hire, develop and motivate workers
  • Project management including: meeting with requesting party to define scope of work; estimating/bidding; coordination with contractors and facility workers; adherence to budget; and completion of project
  • Implement and oversee preventative maintenance program
  • Liaison with building codes, planning/zoning and community design officials
  • Develop and monitor department budget
  • Attend and participate in specific meetings (i.e. Safety, Leadership, Directors, and Green)
  • Related duties as assigned

Required skills/qualifications:

  • Thorough knowledge of the methods, principles and practices involved in the operation and maintenance of engines, boilers, building management systems, life safety systems, ventilating, air-conditioning, and refrigeration systems, and similar equipment and machinery
  • Knowledge of standard hand tools used in the repair of boilers, pipes, valves, motors, engines and related equipment and the ability to plan and supervise a variety of repair tasks
  • Ability to plan, assign and supervise the work of subordinate engineers and helpers and to prepare and maintain complete operating records and reports as required
  • Experience in the operation and maintenance of various types of heating, air-conditioning, and refrigeration systems
  • Five plus years of department-head level supervisory experience
  • Commercial experience with 3-phase high voltage
  • Ability to read and understand blueprints
  • Knowledge and understanding of water and plumbing flow
  • Ability to communicate effectively with senior management and ownership
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office
