When Suns Head Coach Alvin Gentry receives phone calls from team executives during the frantic NBA offseason, it's hard to know exactly what the news about the roster will be.

Such was the the case on Sunday for Gentry, who was away from Phoenix for the 2012 NBA Las Vegas Summer League, when he heard from the team's President of Basketball Operations, Lon Babby.

The Phoenix Suns have signed 2012 first-round pick Kendall Marshall to a contract, the club has announced. Phoenix selected Marshall with the 13th overall pick in this year’s draft on June 28.

Marshall, a 6-4, 195-pound pure point guard, was a two-year performer at North Carolina where this season he earned the 2012 Bob Cousy Award as the nation’s top point guard after serving as the floor general for the nation’s second-highest scoring offense (82.0; Iona, 83.3).

The Phoenix Suns didn’t have to wait long on Sunday to see a little bit of everything they were hoping to see out of second-year power forward Markieff Morris.

During the first 10-minute quarter of play Sunday at the Suns’ opening game of the 2012 NBA Las Vegas Summer League, Morris got the Suns off to a fast start and the lead with 10 points, three rebounds and a monster block.
