Growing up, there was nothing like the feeling of the first day of school. After a long summer, everyone can recall the butterflies felt before a new year of potential and uncertainty.

That’s exactly how Suns rookie Kendall Marshall felt before his first official practice in the NBA on Tuesday morning. The Suns’ lottery pick underwent his first conditioning practice as a pro at the UCSD campus in San Diego, awaiting his first full-contact NBA practice later that evening.

As the Suns tip off the 2012-13 season with just five players returning to the lineup from last year’s team, fans may be curious about the make-up of the new-look Suns. While the faces have certainly changed, Suns Head Coach Alvin Gentry insists that his team’s style will remain intact.

The up-tempo style that he’s referring to is the world-renowned offensive system that has captivated the NBA over the better part of a decade. And under Gentry, it’s here to stay.

Since Ike Diogu last called the Valley home, as an Arizona State Sun Devil, he has played for 10 teams in the last seven seasons, some in the NBA, others overseas. From the Golden State Warriors to the Xinjiang Flying Tigers, the power forward has continued to try to find his path in basketball.

That path has brought him back to the area that launched his career for one more chance at making an NBA roster and making a living in the game he loves.

His nonchalant attitude, soothing cadence and brilliant ability to tell a story puts a person at ease. The Phoenix Suns are seeking highly energetic and talented musicians, with the ability to read percussion music, to try out for the 2012-13 PHX Percussion team. Auditions will be held on Saturday, October 6, beginning at 9 a.m. at US Airways Center. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m.

PHX Percussion is a high-energy drum line that performs at select Suns home games during pre-game and timeouts.
