The Phoenix Suns added size to their frontcourt today by acquiring 6-9, 290-pound center Jahidi White from the Washington Wizards in exchange for guard Brevin Knight, whom the Suns had obtained in a trade with Memphis on Sept. 30.
White, 27, has spent his entire five-year NBA career with Washington, averaging 6.4 points, 6.4 rebounds and 1.14 blocks, while shooting .509 from the field in 256 games (192 starts). He holds the Wizards’ franchise records for most rebounds in a half (18) and most rebounds in a quarter (11), having recorded a career-best 19 boards on Jan. 15, 2002 vs. San Antonio.
“This deal gives us a physical, athletic presence that compliments the style and direction of our team,” Suns President and General Manager Bryan Colangelo said.
The former Georgetown standout was the 43rd overall pick in the 1998 NBA Draft and had his best season in 2000-01 for the Wizards with career-highs of 8.6 points, 7.7 rebounds, 1.63 blocks in 23.7 minutes in 68 games (56 starts).
White appeared in seven preseason games this year for the Wizards and recorded single-game bests of 11 points and seven rebounds in 16 minutes of action versus Memphis on Oct. 14.
Knight, a seven-year NBA veteran, was acquired on Sept. 30 in a trade with Memphis that brought him to Phoenix along with forward Robert Archibald and center Cezary Trybanski in exchange for forward Bo Outlaw and center Jake Tsakalidis. The 5-10 point guard owns career averages of 7.5 points and 6.5 assists in 348 games over six-plus seasons with Cleveland, Atlanta, Memphis and Phoenix. He averaged 0.7 points, 1.0 rebounds and 1.3 assists in 6.3 minutes for the Suns in three games this season.
