Posted: Feb. 6, 2012
US Airways Center celebrated its 20th Anniversary this evening (Friday, February 3) prior to a concert by George Strait, the country legend who helped open the doors to the arena on June 6, 1992. As part of the celebration, US Airways Center unveiled its new, luxury theater boxes, offering fans an all-inclusive, four-person mini-suite for enjoying events and concerts at the arena.
Arizona Governor, Jan Brewer, US Airways Center Managing Partner, Robert Sarver, General Manager of Sports and Entertainment, Ralph Marchetta and City of Phoenix Vice Mayor, Michael Johnson, spoke at the announcement, commenting on the arena’s rich history and innovative, exciting future.
“US Airways Center has provided twenty years of fun for everyone – and anyone – fortunate enough to have enjoyed this great venue,” said Governor Brewer. “We are getting ready to mark Arizona’s entrance into its second century, and the US Airways Center 20th Anniversary is a fitting celebration to begin those festivities.”
US Airways Center has hosted more than 3400 events and concerts since its inception, including world-renowned acts such as Metallica, The Eagles, U2, and Lady Gaga, and remains home to the Phoenix Suns, Phoenix Mercury and Arizona Rattlers.
“US Airways Center continues to serve as the entertainment hub in sports and entertainment here in Arizona,” said Sarver. “We are proud to have hosted more than 30 million guests since opening our doors in 1992, and we look forward to offering unforgettable experiences to our fans for years to come.”
As part of tonight’s commemoration event, US Airways Center also unveiled its state-of-the-art theater boxes, a new amenity offering an all-inclusive guest experience, including VIP parking, food and drink, and access to additional areas throughout the arena. Theater box owners will enjoy the opportunity to attend all major concerts and events held at US Airways Center on an annual basis.
“We have always placed a priority on enhancing our guest experience and product menu here at US Airways Center,” said Marchetta. “The addition of our theater boxes takes that commitment to a new level, and will serve as the latest experience in luxury as we enter our next 20 years here in Phoenix.”
US Airways Center is responsible for an astounding $50 million that the City of Phoenix has received in sales taxes and fees in the 20 years since its inception, including an impressive $18 million in the last five years alone. These figures do not include revenue generated by downtown businesses as a result of US Airways Center events.
“The City of Phoenix is proud to have an arena such as US Airways Center that continues to provide our fans here in Phoenix with the best entertainment options in the Valley,” said City of Phoenix Vice Mayor, Michael Johnson. “The arena serves as a pillar for growth here in downtown Phoenix, and will continue to play an integral role in the revitalization of a vibrant, energetic downtown landscape.”
The Center currently ranks 21st nationally, and 47th in the world, in number of fans that travel through the arena on an annual basis.
