Phoenix Suns Charities Reaches $10 Million Mark in Donations

Posted: June 11, 2010

PHOENIX – With more than $1.2 million in grants to 157 different charitable organizations throughout Arizona, Phoenix Suns Charities marks a milestone of over $10 million in donations since its 1988 inception.

The announcement marks the most successful season in Phoenix Suns Charities 21-year history of funding community projects for children and families. Following a record-breaking year of giving last season, the organization this year has donated more than $1.2 million in grants, program support and scholarships to various charities throughout Arizona. In addition to the annual grant process, funds are distributed through a variety of programs including SunStudent Scholarships, Suns Nite Hoops and directed donations.

“Coming off an overwhelmingly successful season both on and off the court, Phoenix Suns Charities is proud to be able to support a record number of deserving charitable organizations throughout Arizona,” said Kathy Pidgeon, Executive Director of Phoenix Suns Charities. “Thanks to the support of our generous Playmaker donors, corporate partners and Suns fans, we are able to make the biggest contribution back to our community in the foundation’s history.”

Non-profit organizations applied for funding through the foundation’s grant application process. This year, program grants ranged from $1,000 to $100,000. A special reception recognizing all of this year’s grant recipients will be held on Monday, June 21 at US Airways Center, beginning at 4 p.m.

In addition, the annual $100,000 Playmaker Award grant, funded by Phoenix Suns Charities’ 36 Playmaker donors, will go to Halle Heart Children’s Museum. The museum inspires Arizona youth to make healthy lifestyle choices that will impact the rest of their lives.

The grant will assist in funding construction of a new spotlight exhibit “The Beat Goes On,” aimed at educating children about developing healthy ways to lower their risk of heart disease, obesity, high blood pressure and more. The exhibit will feature Suns-themed videos featuring The Gorilla and will deliver important health information. In addition, clear cylinders filled with purple and orange bouncing balls will respond to the rhythm of a child’s heart when a stethoscope is placed on his/her chest. Construction is expected to begin in the coming weeks, with the opening tentatively scheduled for November 2010.

Phoenix Suns Charities utilizes the unique resources of the Suns organization to raise funds which benefit non-profit organizations that assist the needs of children and families. Since its inception in 1988, Phoenix Suns Charities has donated more than $10 million to Arizona organizations, helping children and families across the state.
