Suns Head Coach Alvin Gentry

(Opening statement)

“I thought we got off to a good start and we did a good job. It was a game that we really needed to win. We played with a sense of purpose and a lot of energy. We just couldn’t quite get separation from them which I think is more a testament to what they are than what we couldn’t do. They’ve got a lot of people out and they just continue to compete and play hard. We just couldn’t quite knock them out. We had a 21 point lead there but they just keep fighting back. Shannon stepping in for Grant did a good job. Robin was really good and did a good job for us.”

(On playoff road ahead)

“We know that we are going to have to play well and we are going to have games that we have to win and a lot of those games are going to be on the road. For us, this is our first playoff game and we get on a plane and fly to Sacramento and that will be our next playoff game. I think that’s the way we have to approach it.”

Suns Guard Shannon Brown

(On having five players in double figures)

“We’ve got guys that can do that. We just go out and we don’t worry about who’s getting shots, how many shots that person’s getting. We just get within the flow of the game and we just played our style of basketball today. We got out, ran, got up shots. What we did, we played defense, got rebounds and that’s what led to those breaks.

(On the start of the third quarter)

“We always know the first five minutes of the second half are the most important, and we just wanted to come out, we wanted to hop on them. We knew they were on the road trip and they played, this was like their fourth game in five days or something like that, so we knew they were a little bit tired; we just wanted to come out, jump on them and keep them down.”

Suns Guard Jared Dudley

(On the importance of winning at home)

“It was a must win. This is a team (Hornets) that’s been struggling all year. We had to come out here and get the win – we’re at home, fighting for playoffs. We see Houston losing, Utah’s been losing, so we’ve got to keep it going. Obviously it’s going to come down to the road games, so home games have to be a must win, it doesn’t matter who comes here.”

(On the game)

“I thought the end of the second quarter we got a little separation, nine points. And then the third quarter we picked it up. We know this team is short handed, but they play hard, they play obviously together, so we didn’t want to give them any hope and we did what we were supposed to in the third. In the fourth they made a comeback, as you expect every team, but then we put the hammer on them. ”

Monty Williams

(On fatigue)

“I think that we ran out of gas but I also think that it was a bit of an excuse. We have been in situations before off of a back-to-back and this was the first time that I thought it affected us from an energy standpoint. I thought the ball didn’t move tonight. For whatever reason, whether it was in the post or in the pick and roll we pounded the ball. We had 19 turnovers and you can’t win games on the road with 19 turnovers and not getting to the free throw line. That is a recipe for a loss with those variables.”

(On Robin Lopez)

“I thought [Robin] Lopez had a huge effect on the game. When we take Kaman out of the game we don’t have much size and he really beasted us. He was two for two and six for six from the free throw line at half time. He certainly had an effect on the game. He has improved from a patience standpoint. He has a nice shot from 18 [feet] on in and a nice hook shot and he makes free throws. I thought that segment where he came in and they posted him up really hurt us.”

(On the end of the season)

“It’s time for us to build some momentum going into the summer. Maybe getting a few guys back. And we have to have a good practice on Tuesday and just get ready to play. We need to play our style of basketball. I didn’t see that tonight. The only time I saw it was when we went into a zone. They missed a few times and we got back in the game a little bit, but we can’t rely on zone to help us win games. We are a man-to-man defensive team and we are going to be that way as long as I am here.”

Greivis Vasquez

(On going into the next year)

“I’m thinking about going into next year how tough we are going to be and how we are going to win those game that we have lost by one, two three points.”

(On having 10 player active for the game)

“Yeah, it was great to get a little more rest but the damage was already done. We played without these guys for two or three games. We almost beat the Lakers but we lost the game in the last two minutes. We are going through a tough time but I love it, because I know hard work pays off and we are going to continue to work hard. We are doing the right thing and coming up short but it will pay off.”
