Head Coach Alvin Gentry

“We just didn’t find a way to make baskets and execute where we could keep the game close enough that it was going to matter (in) the last three minutes. You’ve got to give them credit, their defense is great. They’re very disciplined in what they do. They don’t deviate at all from what they’re trying to get done defensively. It’s just a test for us, and we’ve got to get better. That’s the bottom line. We have who we have now, I think the guys will start to play (and) get better.”

(On consistency and falling behind after a lead)

“Once again, we keep searching for consistency. I know I keep beating it like a dead horse but, we’ve got to be able to have some kind of consistency where we’re pretty much assured of what we are going to get most nights. We haven’t been able to do that. The second unit has been very good and then we fluctuate back to struggling. In some kind of way we’ve got to get to the point where we’ve got a pretty good handle on what’s going to happen when I take Steve (Nash) out of the game. I can’t have Steve (Nash) be a 45 minute guy—that’s not going to work out for us. So we have to have Goran (Dragic) and everybody on the second team step up and play well.”

(On getting opportunities to score)

“I think it’s just, with me, with the San Antonio game, I score dictating on the defense. I stand in the corner, I’m on the wing, Steve (Nash) does pick and roll, and the defense decides who scores; if it’s the roller, if it’s Steve coming off the pick and roll, if it’s a wing man. Early on I got a couple shots at the wing, LeBron (James) was guarding me and I tried to get a couple of offensive rebounds, got me going, and then after that it’s getting stops in transition and nobody is really thinking about me, thinking about Steve and Grant (Hill), guys like that, so if I can keep hitting shots like that it will be big for us.”

Marcin Gortat

(On the team’s potential)

“It was a pretty tough game for us and I’ll tell you one thing, this team has a lot of talent and a lot of potential. (There’s) just a lot of room to improve and right now; we just got to work on our defense.”

(On improving on defense)

“Well obviously we just got to clean this thing up and at the practice. Defensively, each one of us got to get better. We just got to do a better job, including me, starting from me, I’m the big man who is supposed to protect the paint and, like I said, today I was a little bit lost in many situations because of the new rotations and new calls, but we’ll pick it up and try to do a better job.”

Heat Head Coach Erik Spoelstra

(On the game)

“A very good start to the road trip, obviously with Dwyane (Wade) out it changed the rhythm of our offense a little bit and so this had to be a team game and we really wanted to make an impact defensively. (The Suns) are a team that’s going through some transition and it’ll take some time to adjust to the new players, but it’s an explosive offensive team – they can put 110 points a game on you, especially here at home. So while we weren’t always fluid on offense, we had some very good defensive stops against one of the premier point guards in the league and a great pick-and-roll system. Collectively, guys really made an impact on that end.”

(On what contributed to slowing down Steve Nash)

“We were trying to take the ball out of his hands – but that’s easier said than done. He has such a high IQ and his skill level is incredible, that he reads a lot of your schemes before they’re happening. But we’ve developed a lot of good habits, we can cover a lot of ground where we’re in the paint and then can get to the three point shooters. If they did beat us off the dribble, guys were coming to make plays at the rim – either blocking shots or JJ (James Jones) had three-and-a-half charges by sticking his nose in there to save possessions.”

(On playing without Dwyane Wade)

“Our No. 1 priority was to make an impact with our identity – which is to defend and not necessarily try to have guys step up individually on the other side of the ball and defensively we did make an impact. Obviously we played the majority of our offense through LeBron (James) and Chris (Bosh) and they really carried us at times and were able to make the game easier for our other guys and we got enough plays from them and enough ball movement at key times to close out with a win.

Lebron James

(On playing the Lakers) “I think it’s just two really good teams using another game to try and get better. It’s not if we win, or if they win, or if they lose or if we lose, that it’ll define our season in any way. I don’t think so – I think both teams will be looking to play well and to play great, because it’s the next game.” (On the importance of stepping up without Dwyane Wade)

“I think it was very important. When you have a guy like Dwyane, it’s a lot of points, rebounds and command on the basketball court that’s not playing. It was important for me to come out a little more aggressive and for the rest of the guys to follow the lead.”

(On whether he had met Muhammad Ali before)

“I have. But it feels like the first time every time you get an opportunity to see him or shake hands with him. He’s by far one of the top two greatest athletes to ever walk the face of the Earth. I think you could put (Michael) Jordan or whoever.”
