Head Coach Alvin Gentry

“You can’t win a game where you don’t guard anybody. You got to guard somebody. You got to guard one person. Even if we guard George Karl we have to guard somebody. We didn’t guard anybody. You cant score 133 points and lose the game, that is ridiculous. We have to guard somebody. They take the ball and drive it right into the teeth of our defense any time they want. You have to give them credit; they did shoot the ball well from three. When you are continuously driving the ball and we are in helping, three-point shots are going to be open. We know that; we have done that before. We have got to change. When you look at a stat sheet, every quarter they score over 31 points. You are not going to win a NBA game. I don’t care how good you are offensively; you are not going to win a NBA game. You have got to guard somebody.”

“Second chance points really killed us. I think we did a good job stopping their initial spurt and I think we did a good job of attacking the glass and getting the rebounds. (Personal performance, missed lay-ups) They don’t get any easier than that. It happens and it is unfortunate, but no matter what keep your head up, keep playing and not get too down on yourself. (Concern about long-term shooting) There is no way I can keep missing that many lay-ups, hopefully. It was just one of those nights. It was a tough, tough night where the ball just didn’t fall for me tonight. I will just continue to keep my head up and keep being aggressive. The buckets will come. (Team start) We didn’t get off to a good start, but we just continue to attack the rim. When Hedo comes off the bench and is aggressive as he is, it really helps us. It makes us a lot more comfortable out there.”

“(Last shot by Nash) It was a great look for Steve, Steve is one of the better shooters on our team and the league. We will take that shot any given day for a tie game with the ball in Steve’s hands. He just missed it. That shot didn’t coast us the game. It is everything else that we didn’t do earlier: not playing defense, not rebounding. It was those things that cost us the game. (What is bothering you about team defense) I think it is just giving up too many of those drives, myself included and everybody. Not going out there and playing with aggression. We know we can score offensively; we can’t just rely on our offense to go out there and win games for us. We have got to find ways to get stops, key stops. You can’t let a team score 130 points, we knew it was going to be a high scoring game, but it can’t be that high scoring. We have to do a better job of stopping teams.”

“(How was Melo before the game) He was going to try it. I think even before the first play, Kenyon said I don’t think we can do much, be careful with him. I had to check in with Jimmy after the game. He looked pretty bad. (Do you commend him) He is a special player. Great players are focused on winning and winning the playoffs and winning championships. (The Suns final shot) We are not closing games like we need to and we have been put in situations that we could have handled better in the fourth quarter. We are playing different people in different situations and there are different reasons for some of the failures; sometimes it is offense, sometimes it is defense. It is hard giving up 44 points off a lot of easy baskets. If we had made our free-throws, it probably would not have been as close as it was. (10 win mark) It was a good month. I was sold to the basketball devil. It took a lot of my effort. With our circumstances, starting from the beginning with two guys hurting, distractions with Melo, Nene hurt in the first couple of games, Chauncey missed a couple; you are down three of your seven players. I think we figured a way of how to win games.”

“I think we did good for the first three quarters or so. We played at the right pace, we just need to make better adjustments come fourth quarter and in crunch time. We have to slow down the offense maybe a little bit, start taking better shots and focus in defensively. Granted they were making a lot of tough threes tonight in my face for the most part. We will figure it out. We will watch film and see where we went wrong. (Strategy to outscore Suns) No it wasn’t that. The strategy was for us to score, but at the same time there comes a point in the game where you have to make a defensive adjustment or a defensive commitment that should be there the entire game; especially in the last six minutes of the game when we are up 10. (Seven players in double figures with Melo out) I thought JR was really, really efficient tonight. He made a lot of tough shots. Obviously, Chauncey played well, Ty played well. Guys that hadn’t been around or aren’t normally in double digits played great tonight; Sheldon as well.”

“It was good to be back out there. I am feeling kind of healthy. I just hate sitting out. (Guys stepping up with Melo out) That is what the team is all about. We expect the other guys to come in and step up. I thought JR was awesome; not just with the shots he made, but he played so hard with extra effort plays, rebounds and steals. He was just awesome. (Phoenix fourth quarter) I thought we would do better in the fourth quarter. Giving up 44 points is really unacceptable no matter who you play against. They are tough to defend with all the shooters they have and Steve out there orchestrating. Any time we made a mistake, they made us pay.”
