Head Coach Alvin Gentry

“It was a great win for us, something that we really needed. I thought the second unit came in and we just scraped and clawed and kind of fought our way back in. We’re just not shooting the ball real well right now, but we just kept hanging in and hanging in.”

“I thought we were good defensively throughout the game, but we couldn’t capitalize. We’d make a stop, we’d come down and we’d have a turn over or an open shot that we just couldn’t make. But I thought the guys just hung in. This is probably as big of a gut check game as we’ve had in a long time. I give credit to the whole team.”

“I thought Channing had his best game for us—best game since he’s been here. I don’t think he made a shot, I don’t even know, but I think he had his best game since he’s been here. He was absolutely terrific defensively and if we can get that kind of effort from him, he’s going to make shots. I’m telling you, he is going to make shots. I’m convinced of that, and if he can play that way defensively I think we will be fine.”

“We have to find a way for our bigs to play without fouling. Channing did it the second half and Robin has to learn to play without fouling. I can’t have him sitting over with me every night with three fouls in the fist six minutes. He has to find a way to stay on the court because we need him on the floor.”

(On the game…)

“We played four games before this one and we were right there and we just had a few mess ups and things we didn’t do right at the end but tonight was great because we battled back, we were down big early and we just kept fighting and kept fighting and we finally got the win.”

(On the last shot in regulation…)

“Well we knew we worked on that play at practice all the time, the end of the game situation and Grant (Hill) threw a great pass. He’s known for great passes. He threw one to Christian Laettner to win the game so he threw a great pass up there and I almost missed the lay-up, but I’m glad it went in.”

Memphis Asst Coach David Joerger

“We missed some free throws. It’s a tough thing, especially with a young team when we thought we had the game won. And I was trying to tell guys it’s not over; it’s not over, crazy things happen. And crazy things did happen. They came out with a lot of momentum. Credit to our guys resiliency, they didn’t go away. They hung in there. I might have played guys too many minutes, I don’t know. Maybe that’s why we missed some free throws. We came out in the second overtime and took a couple of settle jump shots and we wanted to go to the basket. The game plan all night was to attack the rim through the post ups or through the drive and I thought we did that for the most part. We played a lot harder tonight that we did in the first two games of this road trip, so that’s the positive of it.”

Rudy Gay

“It was a couple of immature mistakes. If I would’ve missed that shot, we probably win that game. It would’ve made it tough on them. I tried to miss it and I made it. Foul shooting in overtime, defense; there’s a bunch of things we have to work on. We have to learn how to play in front. We’re always in the game.”

“It was a lot of weird things that happened In that game, some controllable, some uncontrollable. It was a tough loss we had to take. We have to get ready for tomorrow. We had these guys down early, and knowing Phoenix, they’re kind of like Golden State. You can be down by a lot and the way they play and the pace of the game, it’s just a tough loss tonight.”
