    Head Coach Alvin Gentry

“We didn’t play well and they played well. You gotta give them credit. I thought defensively they did a great job of taking us out of everything. WE continued to struggle in the turnover department. I don’t know—we had to have close to 30 if we didn’t have over thirty. As I told the guys, we’re not going to beat [the Mercury] if we turn the ball over 30 times.”

“Disappointing—I think it was disappointing. I thought we have to continue to make progress and obviously this was a setback. They played well, obviously, their pressure bothered us and they continued to do it throughout the whole game even when they were up 50, 40 or whatever it was. It is what it is. The great thing about it is that Friday we get to lineup and play again. We have some things we’ve got to work on. We have to get better defensively and we’ve got to stop turning the ball over. Those are the two areas I have the most concern. And we’ve got to play with a lot more physicality. It’s pretty easy to figure out where the problem is and we’ve just got to correct.”

“I saw that there are things I have to learn—my teammates, my system. So far training camp, games and practices—it’s all a learning process. So far so good, I know when the time comes, it’s going to be much better.”

“It was just another game for me. I just wanted to go out there and compete and do my best. Hopefully we’ll learn from this and move on and try to move on for the next game.”

“I can’t wait to see Toronto when we go there. It should be fun. People don’t have to like me. I’m happy to do my best and try to go out there and compete. I’m just trying to do my best with the Phoenix Suns right now.”

“When Leandro and Jarrett are on the floor then you throw Sunny Weems out there with Amir Johnson, it’s a very quick lineup. It’s the type of speed that we need. I liked what they did but we’ve had those guys together before…Jarrett did a really good job and he and Sunny play well together. They create for each other, they knock down shots, I like both those guys being on the floor. That second unit really got us going.”

“Offensively Kleiza shot the ball well but there will be different guys on different nights that can carry us on offense. Kleiza showed at the World Championships that he can flat out score. People know that Kleiza is a physical player; they’re going to have to try to put bigger guys on him but then he can just go outside. He had that year in Europe and I think it helped him. Teams are going to react with us and we’re going to have to step it up each time we hit the floor.”

“It was fun to be home at Vancouver. The arena had a lot of memories, 41 games in this building a year. Looking around you see different people you know, working or season ticket holders; so it was very fun to be back.”

“We’ve been going hard at each other for the last week and a half and everyone was just eager to get out there. Definitely feels good to just be out there. We all just want to see everybody on the team succeed. It was fun to see the crowd but we all know this is Steve’s town; he’s a Canadian hero so for them to see the only Canadian team from Canada was great. It felt like a real game to me.”

“I’ve been working extremely hard this summer to work on all aspects of my game and I know I had to step up this season and that’s what I’m trying to do.”
