Suns Head Coach Terry Porter

“We did a much better job in the second half as far as tightening things up defensively. We did a much better job of taking care of the ball, so that was nice to see. The zone, the 2-3 worked pretty well for us tonight, so we’re pleased with that. We had just seven turnovers at half and then finished with 11, so we only had four in the second half. We did a much better job defending these guys. They shot 42 percent in the 3rd quarter and then 40 percent in the 4th quarter. I was just really pleased to see our guys step it up in the second half.”

(On using the zone defense)
“We used it one time in San Antonio; we haven’t used it a lot. We wanted to try and keep Shaq on the floor because we thought we had an advantage offensively. We went to the zone as opposed to taking him out and going a bit small.

(On Amar’e Stoudemire)
"He really did a good job; I think he is slowly finding his rhythm. He seemed to be feeling more and more comfortable on the floor. It was nice to see that he gave that lift offensively that we need."

(On guys stepping up)
"We had some guys step up and make some big shots for us. Steve did a good job; Matt did a good job, so it was nice to see that. Early on we struggled trying to keep these guys off the boards. Early on that really hurt us, they got nine or 10 second chance points so we had to tighten that up again, so it was nice to see."

Suns center Amare Stoudemire

“We took care of the ball tonight which was a key for us. I thought the intensity level was there, I thought we did a great job as far as intensity. Defensively we were very active being all over the place definitely trying to crash the boards; all in all it was a good effort for us.”

(On third quarter dominance)
“I had my mind set that I wanted to dominate, I wanted to go out and dominate the third quarter to set the tone for the second half and I was able to do that with the help of my teammates. They were there to cheer me on and I just went out there to dominate. As a team we did that tonight during the second half.”

Suns guard Steve Nash

“I think we had more energy tonight and we were a little disappointed of our performance last time out. I thought we were much better tonight because of that and the offense showed.”

(On building the lead)
“It was great we were sensational during that stretch which really gave us an important lift to get a cushion to get the win.”

(On team shooting better)
“I think we have good players and we are a good shooting team so we should shoot a good percentage, but we have to keep the turnovers down because that will kill us. Not only when it’s out shot attempts, but it also gives us more transition opportunities.”

Trail Blazers Head Coach Nate McMillan

“I thought we played a good first half. We were able to fight back and get ourselves back into the game and take a lead. I thought the second group came in and was able to be aggressive and get to the basket And then the third quarter they came out and were more physical with us on the defensive end of the floor. We started to settle for the jump shot.

"They just packed in their defense and we shot the ball from the perimeter. We can attack that zone or their man (defense) but we didn’t do that. They were the aggressors, they got 30 free throws tonight to our 14. Amare and Shaquille are very physical guys. At times, they just overpowered us in the paint.”

Trail Blazers guard Brandon Roy

“I just thought they played with more energy than we did in the third quarter. We didn’t do a good job of guarding them and they were just a more physical team tonight. Amare shot the ball well inside tonight.

"Nash is a big part of what they do when he’s in the game. He puts us in bad mismatches when he goes on those pick and rolls with Amare and they’ve got good spreaders, so did a good job of making shots and they were just a more physical team tonight. We weren’t very physical tonight.”

Top

Trail Blazers guard Rudy Fernandez

“I think the second unit played good defense and they can fast break when Steve Nash doesn’t play. They were more physical tonight. It’s difficult to play back to back against big teams like San Antonio and Phoenix. These are strong teams and we will learn from these games.”
