The cousin of former NBA center Ralph Sampson, Jamal Sampson worked for the Phoenix Suns in a private workout Tuesday. The 6-11, 235-pound center/forward played one season at the University of California (6.4 points, 6.5 rebounds) before declaring himself eligible for the 2002 NBA Draft.
Following the morning session at America West Arena, the soft-spoken Sampson spoke with Suns.com about his relationship with his famous relative and his hopes for the draft.
Suns.com: How was your workout today? What sort of things did they have you do?
Sampson: Shooting and two-on-two stuff. It was all right.
Suns.com: Where else have you visited?
Sampson: Everywhere. I think about 11-12 teams.
Suns.com: Could you describe your game?
Sampson: I’m a big man who can rebound and block shots.
Suns.com: What do you think you need to work on at the next level?
Sampson: My offensive game.
Suns.com: How is your post-up game coming along?
Sampson: It’s coming along all right. It’s coming along, but it still needs work.
Suns.com: What’s it like to be the cousin of a former NBA star?
Sampson: I don’t think of it as nothing (special).
Suns.com: Does he ever give you any tips or any help with your game?
Sampson: I talk to him every once in awhile. I wouldn’t say he’s helped me with my game. I’ve talked to him about college and stuff like that, but that’s about it.
Suns.com: Can you talk about how fun this whole experience has been for you?
Sampson: It’s fun. It’s exciting. It’s exciting, as you get closer to the draft and everything.
Suns.com: Why did you decide to turn pro after only one season of college ball?
Sampson: It was a good opportunity for me this year. I wanted to try to take a chance this year.
Suns.com: What do you think of the Phoenix Suns’ organization? Did you know much about them prior to the workout?
Sampson: I live in L.A. so I don’t see a lot of Phoenix games, but from what I’ve seen this is a good organization.
Suns.com: Do you have a feel for where you might go in the draft?
Sampson: Maybe late first round, 28, 29.
Suns.com: Do you see yourself fitting in as a center or power forward in the NBA?
Sampson: They have me listed at both positions.
Suns.com: Do you have a preference?
Sampson: Nah.
