Iowa guard Luke Recker paid a visit to America West Arena on Wednesday, joining three other players in a private workout with the Suns. Following the two-hour morning session, Recker spoke with Suns.com about his showing and the upcoming draft.
Suns.com: How did your workout go today?
Recker: I think it went alright. Obviously I didn’t shoot as well as I’d liked to have, but I thought I did pretty well. It’s a workout where they bring you in and they test a number of different things. They test your athleticism and I think overall I did pretty well.
Suns.com: After the workout, the Suns scouts interviewed you. What sort of things do they ask in those interviews?
Recker: You know, it’s a big investment they’re making. If they’re going to pour a lot of money into an athlete, they expect to get a good person. They want to do a background check on you and make sure you haven’t been in a lot of trouble. I think it’s important to do that because you want to have good camaraderie on the team and you want guys to get along. Usually when that happens there’s a good chemistry and you play a lot better.
Suns.com: What’s the craziest question you’ve been asked in any of your interviews so far?
Recker: I don’t know. I’ve been asked a lot of crazy questions. They do the psychological testing and everything else. But different teams ask different questions. Some questions don’t even apply to basketball, but obviously there’s something behind the reasoning for them asking them.
Suns.com: It must be exciting going through all of this.
Recker: It’s exciting. But it’s also nerve racking. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do since I was a little kid and now it’s judgment time. From now until June 26, we’re going to be working out for a number of teams and we’ll see if we’re good enough to play at this level. I have confidence in my abilities and I think I will be wearing an NBA uniform someplace next year.
Suns.com: How would you describe your game for fans who maybe haven’t seen you play too much?
Recker: Well, I think if people look at my college career, they say I was a scorer. But I think I can do a number of things. I think I’m becoming a better defender every day and I think I’m going to defend pretty well at this level. I’m a guy who understands the game and I’m going to do what it takes to win.
