2008 Draft: Q&A with Joe Alexander
Described as a long forward who can score from inside or out, not to mention pound the glass, West Virginia’s Joe Alexander worked the floor for pre-draft workouts at the US Airways Center practice court Thursday. A possible lottery pick come June 26, the 21-year-old averaged 16.9 ppg, 6.4 rpg and 2.4 apg last season for West Virginia in 2007-08.
Alexander talked with the media following Thursday’s workout.
Question: How did it go today?
It was exhausting, but fun. I felt I did well. I shot really good from the NBA three and I competed hard. This is my fourth workout. I have three left. Then I’m done. I keep getting pretty good feedback after every workout, which is good. Teams seem to like what they’re seeing so far. You’re never really sure what is floating around and what people are really thinking. This process is kind of a game you have to play.
Question: What would it be like to play for the Suns?
Joe Alexander: It would be great to play in Phoenix. I like the city. I like the team. They have a good new coach. They already have a lot of talent and a lot of players. It fits my style of play, being athletic, being able to play four positions. I could play here.
Question: Have you made up your mind in terms of committing to the draft?
Alexander: Right now, I’m leaning on staying in the draft because of the positive feedback I’m getting from teams. The reason I entered the draft was to test the waters. That’s the way I’m leaning. I still have a few days and I may change my mind, but we’ll see how it goes.
Question: Did your school’s success this year help you out?
Alexander: West Virginia’s run in the tournament definitely helped my stock. It gives you more exposure and gives you a chance to play on the national stage two or three more times.
Question: Any weaknesses in your game?
Alexander: I don’t think I have any glaring weakness, but the big thing I like to show is that I’m coachable. If a coach or GM tells me I need to work on something, I want to show them I’ll do that and change my game.
Question: What about your strengths?
Alexander: I know I have a lot of upside because I’m continuing to work even now being on the verge of the NBA. I’m still working on getting better every day. Growing up overseas has given the perception that I’ve come out of nowhere.
Question: For people who are not familiar with your game, what can you do out there?
Alexander: I think people are most surprised by the fact that I have guard skills. I can shoot the ball off the dribble, handle the ball, take people off the dribble. People have only seen me play the post this year. They don’t realize I’ve been a guard my whole life, and I have those types of skills.
Question: What were you trying to prove today?
Alexander: I’m trying to prove what I’ve been trying to prove for the last 10 years. I can play with anybody.
