The wave of anticipation is beginning to crest for Suns fans as the 2008 NBA Draft is less than 48 hours away. Who the Suns will take with the 15th and the 48th picks? Only the Suns front office knows, and they aren’t talking.

However, after a year of scouting and research, the Pre-Draft Camp in Orlando and two rounds of individual workouts at their practice facility, the Suns have whittled down their interest to four prospects in three different positions. Depending on who is taken before their selection or if there are any trades or maneuvering at the top of the draft, the Suns choice at that spot could change.

One thing is for certain though, Phoenix will draft someone that it covets in the first round. “We have a group of four that we’ve drilled down,” Sr. Vice President of Basketball Operations David Griffin said. “I think ultimately we’ll be very happy if we stay at no. 15.”

With the prevailing strategy of front offices to keep everyone guessing, the Suns contingent is no different, running every media member amuck with jumbled and paradoxical statements that would make a White House Press Secretary proud.

When asked about whether or not Tuesday’s individual workout would be the last, Griffin replied, “Definitely, as far as I know today.”

“I can’t envision scheduling another one tomorrow, but you never know.”

Such is the nature of this draft. With so many teams believing that just a slight change in their roster could possibly make the difference in the upcoming season, teams are keeping their intentions close to their vests. With that being the case, it makes it difficult for other teams to know what the team ahead of them is going to do.

Teams are scurrying around at the last minute to get that one last look at prospective draft picks. The latest workout at the Suns practice facility was a perfect example of that phenomenon.

The way Tuesday’s session came together was that the Warriors had Ohio State’s Kosta Koufos scheduled to work out in Oakland yesterday, but to facilitate them seeing Texas A&M’s DeAndre Jordan, the Suns allowed them as well as the Cavs, Raptors and Sonics to come and take a peek. Since the Suns liked Koufos, the front office thought it would be help to see him battle against Jordan.

Without the Suns stating who their favorite prospects are in the draft, one could possibly deduce who they favor based on where they need depth and who they've seen on multiple occasions. The word from Phoenix’s brain trust is that the team is seeking a backup point guard, a wing defender and another big man in its rotation.

Besides Koufos, the Suns have evaluated big men such as Florida’s Marreese Speights, Nevada’s JaVale McGee and Rider’s Jason Thompson twice. At swingman, they have seen France’s Nicolas Batum and West Virginia’s Joe Alexander two times as well. Lastly, Texas’ D.J. Augustin, Kansas’ Mario Chalmers, Michigan State’s Drew Neitzel all had strong showings at the point guard position.

So when asked if an additional workout Wednesday would benefit the Suns, Griffin responded, “I think we need to spend that time more judiciously.

“We have a lot to ponder.”

Whether Griffin follows that plan or not, only time will tell. But one thing is for sure, the Suns coaches and front office will receive little rest as they prepare for every scenario in a draft rich with possibilities.
