Phoenix Suns Partner with National Academy of Sports Medicine

Posted: Feb. 17, 2006

The National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) proudly announces their exclusive partnership as the official sports medicine organization of one of the NBA’s most dazzling, high-energy teams, the Phoenix Suns. As part of the agreement, former Calabasas, Calif. based NASM will move its base of operations to Phoenix.

NASM’s proprietary, Optimum Performance Training (OPT) method and precision assessment tools deliver measurable results, for professional and Olympic athletes and health club members, as well as evidenced-based education for licensed medical professionals, certified athletic trainers, and certified personal trainers.

“The NASM – OPT model is an evidence-based assessment and exercise system that is used to identify and correct physical deficiencies as well as enhance performance,” said Dr. Micheal Clark, CEO/President – National Academy of Sports Medicine. “This model can be used for elite athletes like the Phoenix Suns and can also be used for any individual trying to prevent injury, enhance performance or achieve your fitness goal.”

“In the NBA, games lost to injury can be the difference in making the playoffs, retaining homecourt edge in the post-season or flat out turning a profit in a very competitive industry,” said Suns President and General Manager Bryan Colangelo. “NASM has revolutionized our approach to athletic training including everything from injury treatment and prevention to strength and conditioning.”

NASM’s relationship with the Phoenix Suns is one of few in the NBA. This relationship signifies the importance of high quality training and injury prevention techniques for elite performance athletes, as well as setting the table for all young, aspiring athletes to build the necessary foundation that can take their game to the next level.

“For the past several years NASM has provided our sports medicine staff with an essential platform to have our athletes avoid serious injuries and perform at maximum levels,” said Suns Head Coach Mike D’Antoni.

NASM’s mission is to ensure public health and safety by awarding credentials to qualified professionals that demonstrate competence through a system of evidence-based, scientifically-valid certification and continuing education programs.

“NASM has been an unparalleled education provider to myself and my staff,” said Suns Head Athletic Trainer Aaron Nelson. “The OPT model has helped us provide our athletes with the best possible training and corrective strategies to keep them on the court. Each day, our athlete’s needs are addressed through detailed programs providing them with individual corrective exercises and flexibility strategies.”

To learn more about NASM’s Optimum Performance Training program, Clark authored the book Optimum Performance Training: Basketball, Play Like a Pro with the Ultimate Custom Workout Used by NBA Players and Teams, which features Suns guard Steve Nash on the cover.
