During the 2002-03 season he was the only player to be ranked in the top 12 in the NBA in points and assists with 22.2 points (12th in NBA) and 8.1 assists (fourth in NBA). He accounted for 40.3% of Phoenix’s scoring offense during the season between points and assists, third-best in the NBA, and scored 10 or more points in the fourth quarter 17 times.
The 6-2 guard was named to the All-Star Game in Atlanta in February and he was twice named NBA Player of the Week. Marbury scored 40-plus points five times and had 19 games of 30 or more points. He set Phoenix and America West Arena records when he scored 26 points in the fourth quarter on Nov. 29 against San Antonio and also set a franchise record with six three-pointers in the second half on Nov. 22 at Sacramento. Three times during the regular season he hit a game-winning shot and then added another in Game 1 of the playoff series at San Antonio.
Marbury’s 22.3 points per game made his the first Phoenix player to have back-to-back 20-point scoring seasons since Charles Barkley had 23.0 points in 1994-95 and 23.2 points in 1995-96. Marbury also joins Oscar Robertson as the only players with career averages of 20 points (20.5) and 8.0 assists (8.2).
The All-NBA First Team is comprised of league MVP Tim Duncan of the San Antonio Spurs, Lakers guard Kobe Bryant and center Shaquille O’Neal, Orlando Magic guard Tracy McGrady and Minnesota Timberwolves forward Kevin Garnett.
The All-NBA Second Team consists of the Dallas Mavericks’ forward Dirk Nowitzki, Sacramento Kings’ forward Chris Webber, Detroit Pistons’ center Ben Wallace, Philadelphia 76ers’ guard Allen Iverson and New Jersey Nets’ guard Jason Kidd.
Marbury is joined on the All-NBA Third Team by New Orleans Hornets’ forward Jamal Mashburn, Indiana Pacers’ forward/center Jermaine O’Neal, Boston Celtics’ forward Paul Pierce and Dallas Mavericks’ guard Steve Nash.
The 122-member voting panel of writers and broadcasters throughout the United States and Canada consisted of national media members and members from each of the league’s 29 teams who regularly cover the NBA. The media voted for All-NBA First, Second and Third Teams by position with points awarded on a 5-3-1 basis.
