Phoenix Suns forward Gani Lawal (GONE-ee luh-WALL) today underwent a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) that revealed a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and a partially torn medial collateral ligament (MCL) in his right knee.

Lawal sustained the injury during the team’s practice this morning at US Airways Center.

Lawal will be seen tomorrow by Suns team orthopedic surgeon Dr. Tom Carter, and will undergo surgery to repair the knee at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center in one-to-two weeks once swelling subsides.

Lawal will miss the remainder of the season.

Selected by the Suns with the 46th overall pick (second round) of the 2010 NBA Draft, Lawal made his NBA debut Dec. 31.

The Georgia Tech product was recently recalled from the Iowa Energy of the NBA Development League, where he appeared in 10 games, averaging 11.2 points and 6.0 rebounds with the Suns’ affiliate.
