Suns to 'Go Green" on Friday, Powered by APS
As part of NBA Green Week 2011 (April 3-10), the Phoenix Suns will host an eco-friendly matchup, powered by APS, when they take on the Los Angeles Clippers on Friday, April 1 at US Airways Center.
Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. with doors opening at 5:30 p.m.
US Airways Center will be powered by green renewable energy from APS during the game. The energy offset will be equivalent to the amount of energy needed to light more than 3,000 Arizona homes for a week.
Throughout the night, the Suns and APS will feature a variety of environmentally-friendly activities and giveaways designed to teach fans the importance of ‘going green,’ including the distribution of 7,000 limited edition orange compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFL’s) as fans exit the arena.
The energy efficient light bulbs will result in savings of approximately $20,000 in energy costs over the life of the bulbs and keep about 225,000 pounds of greenhouse gases out of the atmosphere.
Prior to tip-off, Solarman – APS’ renewable superhero - along with APS representatives will be on the plaza providing information about APS energy efficiency programs that can help customers save energy and money.
All Suns players will be wearing 100 percent organic cotton shooting shirts featuring the official NBA Green logo, and The Gorilla will showcase his own “Green” outfit and offer advice to fans during videos played throughout the game.
In addition, a special dance routine featuring the APS Dancing Refrigerators and the APS Solar Squad will promote APS’ Refrigerator Recycling Program, which provides customers a $30 rebate when they allow APS to pick up an old, inefficient refrigerator or freezer.
The Suns and APS are also happy to announce that the highly anticipated US Airways Center solar project has begun construction and is scheduled to be completed by the beginning of June. A ribbon cutting ceremony is scheduled for July.
