EuroBasket Blog: Dragic Brilliant in Loss, Kravtsov and Gortat Pitch in
Goran Dragic was once again brilliant in crunch time for EuroBasket 2013 host Slovenia. Against, Croatia, however, the Suns’ guard’s heroics fell short, as Slovenia suffered its first defeat in overtime, 76-74.
The Phoenix playmaker amassed 23 points, eight rebounds and five assists for his home country. A 3-pointer jumpstarted a 9-0 run in the third quarter with a 3-pointer, giving Slovenia a 50-37 lead.
Croatia responded, going on a 13-0 run of their own behind 3-pointers from Roko Ukic and Edo Muric. With the game tied in the final seconds, Bostjan Nachbar’s potential game-winner for Slovenia missed with three seconds left, forcing an overtime period.
Damjan Rudez of Croatia hit two big 3-pointers in the extra frame to help secure the win. Slovenia will likely look to refine their offensive attack against zone defenses before finishing pool play on Monday against Poland. The game will pit Suns teammates Dragic and Marcin Gortat against each other for the first time this tournament.
The game can be seen on ESPN3 or via the WatchESPN app at 12:00 p.m. PST.
Kravtsov, Gortat pitch in
Viacheslav Kravtsov continued his dependable play in limited minutes for Ukraine in Sunday’s win over France, turning in three points, two blocks and two rebounds in just 12 minutes of playing time. The recently acquired Susn big man has seven blocked shots through the first four games of pool play, during which time Ukraine has gone 3-1 to stay atop the Group A standings.
Meanwhile Marcin Gortat’s Poland team fell to 0-4 after suffering an 89-53 loss to Spain. Half of Gortat’s six rebounds came on the offensive glass. The Suns’ big man added two points and a block in 17 minutes of playing time.
