Suns Acquire Draft Rights to Dragic

PHOENIX –The Phoenix Suns acquired the draft rights to the 45th overall pick in the 2008 NBA Draft, Slovenian guard Goran Dragic (GORE-on DRAG-itch), from the San Antonio Spurs, the club announced.

In exchange, Phoenix sent San Antonio the draft rights to 48th overall pick Malik Hairston, a 2009 second-round pick and cash. The 2009 pick traded to the Spurs was obtained by the Suns from the Golden State Warriors on Jan. 3, 2005, in exchange for Zarko Cabarkapa.

The 22-year-old Dragic has played professionally in Slovenia and Spain since 2004-05 with Slovan in the Slovenian IA League (2004-06), Murcia in the Spanish ACB (2006-07) and Union Olimpija in Slovenia (2007-08). In 2007-08 with Union Olimpija, the 6-4, 190-pound guard averaged 11.0 points, 4.3 rebounds and 4.3 assists in Slovenian League play, 11.8 points, 3.5 rebounds and 3.2 assists in Adriatic League play and 9.7 points, 2.9 rebounds and 3.1 assists in Euroleague play.

The left-handed shooter is a member of the Slovenian national team and competed at the 2007 European Championships in Madrid, Spain, as well as the 2006 FIBA World Championships in Japan.
