Now Hiring: Benefits Manager

Sports & Entertainment Services and the Phoenix Suns are seeking candidates for a Benefits Manager. This full-time, salaried position reports to the Vice President, Human Resources. Qualified candidates will present a polished & professional image, strong organizational skills and the ability to build and foster positive relationships. The Human Resources department is a high-touch, highly-visible, employee-service department. This position requires tact and discretion while interfacing with all levels of staff, executives, League and player representatives and various basketball entities.

Representative duties:

  • Oversee all company and league-directed benefit and insurance programs.
  • Negotiate, design and implement core employee benefits package (medical, dental, vision, disability, life, HSA, FSA, 401(k), time off programs, workers comp policies).
  • Mentor and educate peer and employee staff on all lines of benefit products and information.
  • Supervise benefit enrollment meetings and direct HR Coordinator activities related to health and welfare plans and processes.
  • Responsible for facilitation and management of employee 401(k) program and Flex-spending accounts, including annual discrimination testing.
  • Serve as audit support for risk management and retirement plan annual audits.
  • Prepare annual 5500 tax returns, OSHA logs and reporting, and Industrial Commission reporting.
  • Strong “hands on” approach to client service (employee claims management).
  • Communicate and provide benefit cost metrics to senior staff and ownership as necessary.
  • Work closely with all vendors and brokers to ensure compliance, reporting and planning related to all lines of benefits and seek enhanced benefit solutions.
  • Monitor and ensure compliance with all requests for leave.
  • Member of the company Safety Committee and participate in other company events coordinated by HR.
  • Provide additional support and duties, activities and projects as assigned.
  • Skills or Characteristics:

  • Understanding of confidentiality principles, business relationships and sensitivity to the high profile and unique nature of the professional sports industry.
  • Have experience in self-funded and HSA medical platforms with functional ability to reconcile premiums and monthly billings.
  • Advanced knowledge of ERISA, HIPAA, ADA, ARRA, and upcoming health care enactments.
  • Functional knowledge of worker’s compensation laws with ability to report and track injuries for risk management program.
  • Knowledge of 5500 tax returns and reporting capabilities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, especially in the area of employee education.
  • Highly proficient in Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills (via telephone, correspondence, and in person). Polished, positive demeanor and appearance.
  • Must be a self-starter who will take initiative and can work with minimal supervision.
