2013-14 Player Preview: Marcin Gortat

by Matt Petersen

Marcin Gortat

At a glance: 6-11, 240 pounds, 29 years old

2012-13 stats: 30.8 minutes, 11.1 points, 8.5 rebounds, 1.6 blocks per game

How he got here: Acquired in a trade with the Orlando Magic on Dec. 18, 2010.

What he brings to the table: In short: a presence in the middle. Gortat gives the Suns a guy who not only can, but looks forward to manning the paint. His rebounding numbers are even more impressive given his minutes per game. The Polish big man should have even more familiarity with Goran Dragic in the pick-and-roll, a set in which he's become more adept at finishing.

Goal: Improve free throw shooting (65.2 percent in 2012-13)

Best game as a pro: Nov. 7, 2012 at Charlotte. Gortat punished the Bobcats' interior with a near-triple double of 23 points, 10 rebounds and seven blocks. The performance came despite foul trouble in a tightly contested game, an invaluable ability for any NBA big man.
