Day 4: Public Scrimmage
One of Mike D’Antoni’s patented beliefs is that the Suns’ greatest challenge doesn’t necessarily come from other teams, but themselves. Well, the Suns literally got a close-up look at one of their biggest hurdles Saturday, facing one another in an inter-squad scrimmage.
It was a win for all parties involved. Tucson was able to get a first-hand look at the Suns, General Manager Steve Kerr was able to visit his old stomping grounds, the new players demonstrated their talent and the Suns were able to produce a great show. The beauty of an inter-squad scrimmage is that if everyone does their job, no one goes home a loser. And while this was the pervasive theme throughout night, in the actual game itself, Team White was able to squeak out a 97-91 victory over Team Orange. >> Read more
Day 3: School Ties
Day 3 was a wild one for the Suns at Camp Tucson on Thursday. Before heading to the court, the Suns front office took on the basketball staff in a volleyball match. After the recreation it was time to get to work...kind of.
Once at the University of Arizona campus, Assistant Athletic Trainer Mike Elliott provoked the wrath of Steve Kerr by bravely sporting an ASU Devils tshirt. Check out the photo gallery to see what happened next. After practice, the team gathered for a special dinner to celebrate camp, a newcomer's birthday, and the traditional rookie talent show. The Suns Tucson contingent was completed this morning when Amare Stoudemire arrived in town fresh off a recent procedure on his knee. STAT was spotted walking freely in the team's hotel and is working on a rehab process that should have him back on the court within weeks.
The arrival of Stoudemire means one more veteran in camp, but there are two guys who are experiencing everything for the first time. Find out more about D.J. Strawberry and Alando Tucker in the latest feature story! Day Two: New Faces
There is a proverb that says that within uncertainty lies prosperity. Every now and then, a professional team will take a chance on an unknown player and hope that their wildcard ends up being an ace.
In the Suns camp this week, the one player that seems to fit that bill is Doug Thomas. Thomas first came to my attention during the informal morning workouts when he seemed to dunk everything in sight. After a ridiculous tip-jam, I turned to former Sun Mark West to find out who he was. >> Read more Day One: Right To Work
It took less than 24 hours for all of the hoopla surrounding Media Day to become a distant memory, as a very-focused Suns squad opened Training Camp in Tucson Tuesday.
After a light workout in the morning, things picked up come sundown, as the team engaged in a full slate of full-court, five-on-five basketball on the University of Arizona’s McKale Center floor. The week marks the Suns' second camp at the school in the last three seasons... A Rookie's Perspective
We had our media day this afternoon before taking a bus up to Tucson, and I got a chance to put on my new Suns jersey for some pictures. It fits great, nice and snug. Actually, this is the first time that I've ever had a name on my back. As a kid, you always look forward to having your name on a jersey, but when I got to Wisconsin, they didn't do that. They only had numbers. So that was really exciting today, and it’s definitely an honor to wear a Suns jersey.
Go For Launch
Training camp is almost here, but the Phoenix Suns had one more appointment in town before heading to Tucson.
The team held Media Day on Monday as players and coaches spoke to reporters, got official photos taken, and much more. For the fourth straight year, Tom Leander and Cedric Ceballos were on hand to host a live webcast of all the action before the team heads to Tucson! |
