Magic Johnson: Hornacek for Coach of the Year
After their 124-100 victory over the Indiana Pacers Wednesday night, the basketball world has seemingly caught a case of Suns fever.
First, Kevin Durant called Ish Smith one of the fastest players in the league. Now, NBA legend Magic Johnson took to Twitter Thursday to voice his support for the Suns’ blazing start.
Coach Jeff Hornacek of the Phoenix Suns should win the NBA's Coach Of The Year award!— Earvin Magic Johnson (@MagicJohnson) January 23, 2014
Indeed, it’s high praise considering Hornacek and Johnson went head-to-head as members of the Suns and Lakers respectively during their playing days.
Hornacek has helped to instill a disciplined, up-tempo system which has translated into a 24-17 record. Hornacek won Western Conference Coach of the Month for December 2013 (10-3) to become third person to win Coach and Player of the Month (December 1991) and the first to win both with the same franchise.
Phoenix has improved on both ends of the court in Hornacek’s first year. The Suns rank 8th in the NBA with an Offensive Rating (points scored per 100 possessions) of 105.7 (29th at 98.2 last season).
The Suns also rank t-12th in Defensive Rating at 102.6 (24th at 105.7 last season) and rank t-9th in Net Rating at +3.1 (28th at -7.5 last season).
