Jr. Suns/ Jr. Mercury Members Recognized at April 15th Game

During halftime on Wednesday April 15th, the last game of the 2008-09 Phoenix Suns season, five kids were recognized for being the 2009 Phoenix Suns Regional Competition Champions for the Jr. NBA/ Jr. WNBA Skills Challenge, sponsored by SINGLUAIR. Along with these five excellent competitors being recognized, Jr. Suns/ Jr. Mercury player Grant Fogerty and Jr. NBA/ Jr. WNBA Phoenix coach of the year Army Specialist Bryan Sheppard, were also recognized for their achievements with the Jr. NBA/ Jr. WNBA.

Prior to the game at Shadow Mountain High School, the top 24 competitors from across Arizona competed hoping to advance to the National Finals in Orlando, Florida later next month. The 2009 Phoenix Suns Regional Competition Champions are: in the 9 & 10-year-old girls division Kaitlyn Glasford, in the 9 & 10-year-old boys division Adriano Steel, in the 11 & 12-year-old girls division Jada Willingham, in the 13 & 14-year-old division Chureah Laudel, and in the 13 & 14-year-old boys division Joshua Galvan.

Jr. Suns player Grant Fogerty, an 11 year old from the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Scottsdale, was recognized for his outstanding achievement of being selected to be a part of the Jr. NBA/ Jr. WNBA National Team. Grant was able to have a unique and exciting opportunity during All-Star week with the Jr. NBA/Jr. WNBA National Team. He also participated in a number of unforgettable things throughout the weekend including attending All-Star Saturday Night and the All-Star Game.

Jr. NBA/ Jr. WNBA coach and Army Specialist Bryan Sheppard was recognized for his outstanding achievement as a coach and is the recipient of the Jr. NBA/ Jr. WNBA Coach of the Year for the Phoenix market, which includes all of Arizona and New Mexico. At the White Sands Missile Range Child and Youth Services Center near Las Cruces, New Mexico, Sheppard has remained loyal and dedicated to his local youth by coaching and mentoring them for the past 2 years. Sheppard’s connection with youth and love of sports made him a perfect candidate for the Jr. NBA/ Jr. WNBA Coach of the Year.
