June was a busy month for the Phoenix Suns working out several players and going through the NBA Draft process. The end of the month also brought about many young basketball hopefuls as June 28th marked the start of the Suns Basketball Day Camp at Thunderbird High School in North Phoenix. The camp took place from June 28th -July 2nd at Thunderbird and two other surrounding high schools. The 270 campers that attended were thrilled to be there during the star studded week.
On Sunday, June 28th camp kicked off with registration in the main gymnasium where each camper received a jersey to wear throughout the camp, a backpack filled with goodies such as a hat, t-shirt, Suns Basketball Camps basketball, mini basketball for autographs, and coupons from our sponsors.
Campers were welcomed to the week’s events by Phoenix Suns Head Coach Alvin Gentry, Forward Louis Amundson, and Suns Basketball Camps Director, former ASU Basketball Head Coach Bill Frieder. Amundson stayed at camp to sign an autograph for each camper after the opening ceremonies. Later in the day, campers were divided into teams within conferences based on age and skill level.
Throughout the week, campers had the opportunity to receive instruction, techniques, and autographs from Phoenix Suns alumni Ced Ceballos and Mark West, Phoenix Suns assistant coach Bill Cartwright, Phoenix Suns broadcaster Tom Leander, Phoenix Suns players Robin Lopez, Goran Dragic, and Taylor Griffin, Phoenix Mercury Head Coach Corey Gaines, Phoenix Mercury player Cappie Pondexter, and former Harlem Globetrotters player Curley “Boo” Johnson. These sessions throughout the day by the guest speakers gave campers the opportunity to personally connect and participate in their lessons.
During camp, the campers participated in games, drills, film sessions, and many other tasks in order to become better at the game. Each year, Suns Basketball Camps provides various skill-building techniques and activities for the campers. The camp coaches come from major high school and college programs all over the country. They teach campers the importance of teamwork and positive attitudes in order to succeed.
Thursday, July 2nd marked the last day of camp. Events kicked off with the championship games followed by an awards ceremony. Jared Dudley, Mark West, The Phoenix Suns Gorilla, Sol Patrol, Hairy, and Hairyson were on hand to greet parents and help distribute awards. Each player received a certificate signed by their coach, Steve Kerr, Alvin Gentry, Corey Gaines, and Bill Frieder.
The fun activities, giveaways, awards, entertainment, drills, guest speakers, games, and autographs gave the campers an unforgettable experience and enjoyable week. Every camper was given an opportunity to learn, become a more experienced basketball player, and make new friends.
The Phoenix Suns Basketball Day Camp would not have been such a success without the help and support of our staff, campers, and encouraging parents.
