After signing Danny Manning to a bargain one-year contract on Sept. 8, 1994, the Suns caught fire, going 36-10, with the forward averaging 17.9 points and 6.0 boards a game. Unfortunately, Manning tore his ACL during a mid-season practice and was lost for a year. Despite the injury, the Suns re-signed him to a substantial deal, both for his loyalty and a show of confidence. "D" returned in January 1996 and had returned to his old form by the 1997-98 season, in which he was named the NBA's Sixth Man of the Year. Manning was traded during the 1999 offseason in the deal which brought Penny Hardaway to Phoenix.
