Suns History: 3-Pointers
April 20, 2016
With 165 3-pointers this season, Mirza Teletovic now holds the NBA record for most 3-pointers off the bench in a season. This got us to thinking about the greatest long-distance shooters in Suns history. Let's take a look back at some of the best seasons in Suns shooting.
Quentin Richardson holds the Suns record for most 3-pointers made (3PM) in a season with 226 in 2004-05. Q shared some of the glory of his statistical feat with Steve Nash, saying the eventual MVP "knows where everybody is on the court. It's just a sense of calm when he's out there controlling the team.”
A Bell-ringer from Raja! Bell is truly one of the best 3-point shooters in Suns history. He holds the 2nd-overall mark with 205 3PM in 2006-07. The 5th most 3PM also belongs to Bell, as he splashed down 197 in 2005-06 at a career best 44% clip.
Green didn't spend long in a Suns jersey, but in 2013-14 he knocked down 204 threes. This puts him third in Suns history and also marks his career-high.
Thunder Dan was making it rain from downtown before it was trendy. During the 1993-94 campaign, Majerle drained 192 threes. The following season he bested his mark by sinking 199 triples and securing his position at 4th most in a Suns season. Overall, Majerle has made the 2nd-most three-pointers in Suns history with 800.
Leandro Barbosa knocked down 190 three-pointers in 2006-07, ranking him seventh on our seasonal Suns shooting list. The next year wasn't so bad either with 164 3PM.
Just plain Nashty. Steve Nash has only the 8th best Suns season in terms of 3PM with 179 in 2007-08, but he holds the all-time record with 1,051 over the course of his Phoenix career.
Joe Johnson's final season in the purple and orange included 177 three-pointers. Though it came quite early in his career; the total still stands as his career-high.
The prototype for the now popular Stretch Four, Channing Frye, had a shooting season for the ages in 2009-10: 172 triples made at a 44% clip. The amount and percentage still stand as career-bests.
With just one less trey than Frye, Wesley Person sniped 171 from long-range in 1996-97.
Teletovic currently has the 15th most 3PM in a single Suns season. After factoring in both his bench role and limited minutes, you see that this season has actually been one of the most impressive shooting performances in NBA History. He is one of four players to ever make more than two 3PG while averaging less than 21 MPG. He is also the first player to ever shoot more than 400 treys at over 39% in such limited playing-time.
Jason Richardson was a key contributor to the 2009-10 Phoenix Suns. His presence was felt most from behind the arc: 157 3PM at 40%.
As a Boston Celtic, Danny Ainge led the league with 148 3PM in the 1987-88 season. Foreshadowing the eventual importance of the three-point shot, Ainge hit a career-high 150 treys for Phoenix in 1992-93 for third-most in the league. Ainge also ranks third in 3PM over the course of his career (1981-82 through 1994-95).
