The Suns picked "The Iceman" George Gervin with the third round of the 1974 draft with the 40th overall pick. He elected to stay in the ABA where he joined the San Antonio Spurs.
In 2005 the Suns drafted a name that would become familiar with fans late in the second round with the 50th pick. That man was Marcin Gorat. He was traded to Orlando before returning to Phoenix years later.
Eaton's story is a unique one. After high school he attended the Arizona Automotive Institute and repaired cars. Three years later he was discovered and enrolled in a junior college. After his freshman year the Suns selected him with the 107th pick in the fifth round of the 1979 draft. He elected to return to school rather than try his hand yet at the NBA.
The Suns took a waiver on Stephen Jackson with the No. 42 pick in the second round of the 1997 draft straight out of high school. He was cut right before the start of the season and didn't make an NBA roster till 1999.
