10 Reasons to be Excited for the 2013-14 Suns
October 3, 2013
Prior to the start of every Suns season, regardless of expectations, there’s an indelible sense of excitement and anticipation. This season, however, with a retooled roster and Jeff Hornacek now at the helm, the blending of the past with an eye on the future certainly makes the 2013-14 season all the more captivating. Click through to see ten reasons why Suns fans should be excited for this year’s campaign from Suns.com's Ben York.
The Return of Channing Frye: After a year off from basketball due to an enlarged heart, Channing Frye is back with the Phoenix Suns – and he couldn’t be happier. Indeed, Frye’s journey back to the hardwood is both inspiring and exciting. And his sharp-shooting from beyond the arc is just a bonus.
Jeff Hornacek's Fast-Paced System: Predicated on the defensive end of the floor, Hornacek and his staff want this Suns team to be more up-tempo and energetic. More importantly, there will be an increased focus on hitting the glass and getting out in transition. Seeing the progression of Hornacek’s system as the team becomes more comfortable and familiar with it will be one of the more compelling things to watch this season.
The Young Guns: Speaking of compelling things to watch, Archie Goodwin and Eric Bledsoe should be at the very top of that list. Both players have unlimited potential and are naturally gifted from an athletic standpoint. Perhaps even more significant, they’re two of the hardest workers on the team. When raw talent meets hard work and preparation…watch out, NBA.
Alex Len's Development: Alex Len has the potential to become the Suns’ franchise center of the future. At 7-1 and just 20-years-old, Len has a unique combination of size and athleticism with even more room to grow. Look for Len to immediately impress Suns fans with his one-of-a-kind game and impressive range.
The High-Flyers: Between Shannon Brown, Gerald Green and the Morris brothers, this Suns team is sure to provide frequent above-the-rim highlights.
Mini-LeBron: When King James himself dubs you “Mini-LeBron,” you’re doing something right. One of the most highly touted young players in the league, Eric Bledsoe is poised for a breakout season. In fact, he’s already impressed coaches with his playmaking ability.
Enter the Dragon: Coming off a stellar second half to the 2012-13 season, Goran Dragic continued to amaze during EuroBasket as Suns.com’s Matt Petersen chronicled. With brand new weapons at his disposal – both in the frontcourt and in the backcourt – the 2013-14 season could be The Dragon’s best yet.
Heart, Hustle and Flow: With such a young team, Hornacek has made a point to stress the importance of working hard at all times and being consistent. Needless to say, this Suns team has made a commitment to play with heart and hustle every day. Having that type of mindset is mandatory in the type of system Hornacek is instilling. Plus, it’s so much fun to watch.
Surprise Players: Last year, it was the incomparable P.J. Tucker who quickly won Suns fans over with his unrivaled hustle. In training camp, new addition Miles Plumlee has already turned heads with his strong play. With multiple new players on the roster this season, it’s anyone’s guess who the next player will be to surprise fans.
A New Era of Phoenix Suns Basketball: There’s something thrilling about a fresh start or a new beginning. For the 2013-14 Phoenix Suns, that’s precisely what they have in front of them – a new look, new coach and a reenergized attitude. The sky is the limit.
