Nuggets Downs NBA D-League Select Team

LAS VEGAS, July 19 - The Denver Nuggets defeated the NBA D-League Select Team, the NBA D-League's entry into the 2009 NBA Summer League presented by EA Sports, 94-90, in the night cap at the Thomas and Mack Center on the campus of the University of Nevada - Las Vegas this evening.
Ronald Dupree came off the bench to score a game-high 22 points for the Nuggets, while Ty Lawson poured in 21 of his own. Jasper Johnson led the NBA D-League Select squad with 21 points and Kurt Looby chipped in with a 10-point, 11-rebound double-double in the loss.
The Nuggets came out shooting in the first quarter jumping out to an early 9-2 lead before the NBA D-League Select team battled back to be down two, 14-12 with just over three minutes to play. Nuggets 2009 NBA Draft first round selection Lawson exploded in the first quarter for 15 points on five-of-seven shooting, including a perfect three-of-three from behind the arc. Johnson paced the Select team with seven points. At the end of one, Denver led 23-18.
The NBA D-Leaguers went to work in the second quarter going on a 10-2 run and digging themselves out of a eight-point hole, 30-22, to tie the score at 32 on a long-range Forbes jumper at the 4:00 minute mark in the period. From there, the teams traded buckets before Walker Russell, Jr. gave the NBA D-League their first lead of the game at 36-35 with 2:56 to play when he connected on a pair of free throws. The teams knotted in two more ties, at 35 and 38 points, before the Select team took a 42-41 lead into the halftime break. Lawson played just five minutes in the second quarter and was held scoreless in the period but his 15 first-quarter points were a game high through two quarters. Johnson scored four points in the second quarter to lead the NBA D-League with 11 points in the half.
The Nuggets took control in the third quarter, going on an 8-0 run to bring the score to 60-54 with 5:12 to play in the period. In all, Denver outscored the NBA D-Leaguers 23-21 in the third, giving them a 64-63 lead going into the final frame.
In the fourth quarter, the NBA D-League select was down one point, 74-73 with 6:15 to play, but the Nuggets went on an 11-3 run to bring the score to 85-76 in the quarter and never looked back before securing the four-point victory.
