Third Quarter Lifts NBA D-League Select Team

LAS VEGAS, July 13 – The NBA D-League Select, the NBA Development League’s entry into the 2009 NBA Summer League presented by EA SPORTS, defeated the Minnesota Timberwolves, 96-91 in the first game of the fourth day of action on the campus of University of Nevada-Las Vegas.
Gary Forbes and Othyus Jeffers scored 20 points a piece for the Select team en route to the team’s first win against an NBA Summer League team.
“It was definitely a good feeling to come out and win that first game, especially because we have a lot to prove to people being a team from the NBA D-League,” said Forbes of the win. “We’re just happy to have played together and to have gotten the W.”
The NBA D-League team solidified the win in the second half, coming from a 10-point half time deficit to secure the five-point victory. Forbes and Jeffers combined for 21 points in the half, while Jasper Johnson chipped in with 8 in the last two quarters and Coleman Collins added 13 of his own in the third and fourth.
The first quarter got off to a slow start, netting a combined three buckets in the game’s first five minutes with the Timberwolves jumping ahead to an early 14-5 lead as Wayne Ellington scored a quick six points in the span of a minute. Will Frisby led all scorers for the Select team, netting six points on three-of-four shooting in the first. Walker Russell hit a buzzer-beater as time expired in the first quarter to bring the Select within five, 21-16.
In the second period, the teams traded runs with the Timberwolves extending their lead to as many as 10 on two occasions, with the Select team cutting the lead to as a few as two points. Ellington’s hot hand led the way for Minnesota in the second – he scored eight points in the period to bring lead all scorers with 15 points in the half. Jeffers scored netted eight points of his own in the quarter to finish the half with 10. Minnesota was up 48-38 going into the halftime break.
The NBA D-League Select dominated the third quarter, outscoring the Timberwolves 30-10 in the period. Forbes scored six of his eight third-quarter points in the period’s first two minutes, and Johnson connected with 7:30 to play in the third to give the Select their first lead of the game, 50-48. From there, the teams traded buckets before the Select made another run, punctuated by a Collins’ and-one to give the team a 10-point lead with just over a minute to play.
