Charlotte 81, L.A. Clippers 66 (F)

LAS VEGAS, July 12 – The Charlotte Bobcats won their first game at the 2008 NBA Summer League Presented by EA SPORTS at the COX Pavilion on the Campus of UNLV on Saturday, defeating the Los Angeles Clippers 81-66, to bring the Clippers’ record to 1-1 on the league.

The well balanced Bobcats attack was led by Jermareo Davidson’s 15 points and D.J. Augustin’s 14.

“I thought we really played hard,” said Charlotte Summer League head coach Dave Hanners. “The guys really gave a lot of great effort especially on the defensive end. Offensively I think we put a lot of stuff in early, and I think it showed that I put too much in, and execution wasn’t great. We turned the ball over a little too much, but they really tried to do everything we asked them to do, and we have to be happy with that.”

The Bobcats came out of the gate hot, leading the Clippers by as many as nine in the first period before finishing up with a 21-14 advantage. The tides shifted in the second quarter, as the Clippers went on a 9-2 run through the stanza’s opening six minutes before evening the score at 25 with just under three minutes to play in the half.

The low-scoring first half, which featured two lead changes and three ties, came to a close with the Bobcats clinging to a one-point, 31-30, lead.

A defensive battle, the game remained close through the third quarter before the Bobcats upped the ante finishing with an eight-point lead. The period saw six lead changes and six ties.

Clippers guard Eric Gordon left the contest with 8:01 remaining in the 4th quarter with a strained left hamstring. The Bobcats pounced on the short-handed Clippers from that point on as they pushed their lead up to as many as 19.

Los Angeles was led by Al Thornton who finished with 22 points and Gordon who poured in 15 points of his own.

Next up: Charlotte will square off against the New Orleans Hornets in Sunday’s first game, while the Clippers will battle the Memphis Grizzlies late Sunday afternoon.
