Las Vegas, July 12, 2007 -- The Memphis Grizzlies had an easy time with the Cleveland Cavaliers Thursday night, winning 100-76. Rudy Gay led the Grizzlies with 20 points (7-14 FG, 5-7 FT) in just 22 minutes of play.
“I was relaxed out there today,” Gay said of his performance. “Coach just told me to make smart decisions out there and I thought I did that pretty well.”
Gay, who was an NBA All-Rookie First Team member last season after averaging 10.8 points and 4.5 rebounds, looked impressive in the win with powerful drives to the basket and a nice outside jump shot.
“The coaches wanted me to come down here and I wanted to come here,” Gay remarked of playing in summer league. “We’re playing a new style (this season), it’s a quick start for me to learn how to work in the system.”
Memphis outscored Cleveland by 10 in the first and second quarters en route to the 24-point win. The Grizzlies largest lead was 32 points (8:33 left in the fourth quarter).
Cleveland was paced by Dijon Thompson, who chipped in 17 points (6-15 FG) and nine rebounds in 33 minutes of play. The Cavaliers were without point guard Daniel Gibson.
