Wall sits out, Wizards fall to Knicks

Posted Saturday July 17, 2010 7:50PM

Five Knicks scored in double figures as New York defeated the Washington Wizards in a 109-107 come-from-behind win in the first game of the ninth day of action at the 2010 NBA Summer League in Las Veags. The Wizards led by as many as 20 points in the game, but saw their lead dwindle as Knicks Summer League invitee Leo Lyons had an 11-point fourth quarter en route to New York outscoring Washington 30-24 in the game's last quarter of regulation and forcing only the second overtime game at the 2010 NBA Summer League.

The Knicks struck first in overtime, just twenty seconds into the two-minute period to take a 103-101 advantage. Cartier Martin kept the Wizards in the game, though, with two quick three-pointers to bring the score to 107-108 with just 9.3 seconds remaining. The Knicks missed three free throws with under 10 seconds to play, but Toney Douglas drew an offensive foul at half court to help the team hold on to a two-point advantage, 109-107 to seal the victory. The Wizards attempted a last-second shot, which fell short.

Martin led all scorers with 24 points, while Washington teammates Kevin Palmer and Lester Hudson finished with 21 and 19, respectively. Leo Lyons led the Knicks with 21 points and Toney Douglas finished with 19 in the game.

New York used a 10-2 run in the last six minutes of the fourth quarter to cut the Wizards lead to three points, 94-91. The teams traded buckets, with the Wizards regaining a three-point lead before Landry stole the ball at mid-court from Washington with a minute to play and found Douglas under the basket for his second consecutive layup, bringing the Knicks within one, 96-95 with 51 seconds to play. A flurry of fouls, including a technical on Knicks Summer League had coach Dan D'Antoni, along with some fast-paced buckets tied the game at 101 with eight seconds to play. Neither team scored again in regulation.

During the fourth, The Knicks shot 7-of-9 from the free throw line, while the Wizards were a perfect 7-of-7. New York's Lyons finished with 11 points in the fourth quarter during the Knicks run, while Landry Fields chipped in with eight.

The Knicks and Wizards tangled in the first quarter, with the Wizards owning as much as a nine point lead before narrowly edging the Knicks 28,-26, to finish the period. New York's offensive efforts early were led by Walker, who finished the quarter with a game-high 11 points. He was one of only five Knicks to play in the first quarter. The Wizards, playing without John W and JaVale McGee who didn't dress for the team's last game in Las Vegas, shot 56 percent in the first quarter, including 10-of-18 from the field.

The Knicks briefly stole the lead in the second quarter on the back of a 12-3 run that brought the score to 46-42 with three minutes to play. But, the Wizards rallied back, going on a run of their own, punctuated by a Hudson long-range three, to put Washington back on top, 52-46. In the last three minutes of the first half, Washington outscored New York 17-3, including a buzzer-beating fast-break layup, to end the half with an 11-point advantage, 60-49. Hudson scored 14 of his 17 first half points in the second quarter for Washington, while Jaycee Carroll scored nine points in seven minutes in the second quarter.

New York outscored Washington 22-17, cutting the Wizards' lead, which had ballooned to as many as 20 points, to only six points at the end of three, 77-71. Toney Douglas scored six points for New York in the third, bringing his total to 10 points through three.
