Knicks hold off Pistons to spoil Monroe's big game

Posted Friday July 16, 2010 7:25PM

The New York Knicks defeated the Detroit Pistons 92-80 in the first game of Day 8 at the 2010 NBA Summer League on the campus of UNLV. The Knicks used a 19-point showing from Bill Walker to put away the Pistons, who stayed close through the first half.

Detroit's Greg Monroe led all scorers with 27 points, 10 coming in the fourth. Monroe also pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds. Jerome Jordan added 16 and Landry Fields chipped in 15 for New York.

Detroit charged out of the game in the fourth, outscoring New York 10-2 in the first five minutes to trim its deficit to 77-69. The Knicks answered back, going on a quick 6-1 run to regain a 85-70 lead with four minutes to play.

Walker scored eight in the third for the Knicks on 3-for-4 shooting to help New York extend its lead to 18. On the defensive end, the Knicks held Monroe scoreless in the third, as the Pistons scored 18 in the quarter.

New York extended its lead to as many as eight during the second quarter, due in part to a seven-point effort from Jordan, who finished the half with a team-high 11. The Pistons kept the game close, as Monroe scored 13 of his 17 first-half points in the second, shooting a perfect 6-for-6 from the field and adding five points from the free-throw line.

The Pistons outscored New York 21-20 in the second. New York owned a three-point lead at 44-41 heading into the third.

The Knicks and Pistons traded baskets through much of the first, as the teams knotted in five times and the lead swapped back and fourth four more.

The Knicks came out on top with a 24-20 advantage after one. New York played 13 players during the first quarter, with Walker and Warren Carter each scoring five points.

The Knicks finish their Summer League schedule Saturday when they face John Wall and the Washington Wizards at 1:00 p.m. PT in the COX Pavilion, while the Pistons finish their run at the desert classic with a 2-3 record.
