Knicks grab easy win over Lakers

LAS VEGAS -- The New York Knicks cruised to an easy 71-63 victory over the Phoenix Suns in the first game at the NBA Summer League Monday afternoon from UNLV's Cox Pavilion in Las Vegas.

After trailing by two points in the third quarter, the Knicks outscored the Lakers 15-4 in the final four minutes of the period to regain the lead for good. New York led by as many as 17 in the game as they earned their first victory at the desert classic.

Bill Walker and Landry Fields led the Knicks effort combining for a total of 31 points. For the game, the Knicks shot 45 percent from the field (27-60) while the Lakers shot just 33.3 percent (22-66).

Both teams struggled early in the ballgame with the Knicks holding a 22-16 advantage at the end of the first quarter, the Lakers hitting just 5-15 from the field for 33.3 percent while the Knicks hit 8-16.

Neither team scored in the opening two minutes of the second quarter until Toney Douglas connected on a hook shot at the 8:02 mark in the quarter. The Knicks finished the quarter scoring just 10 points on 3-13 from the field while the Lakers scored just eight points on 4-16.

Trailing by eight points heading into the third quarter the Lakers went on a 10-2 run early in the quarter to take the lead for the first time in the game. However it wasn't enough as the Knicks took the lead for good with 3:33 left in the period.

The Lakers were led by Derrick Caracter, who earned his third straight double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds.

Patrick Ewing was on hand to watch his son Patrick Ewing Jr. who plays for the Knicks.

The Lakers will continue their Summer League Play on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. as they host the Sacramento Kings in the Thomas and Mack Center. The Knicks will look to change their luck on Wednesday as they host the Toronto Raptors at 3:00 p.m. in COX Pavilion.
