Behind Taylor's 21, Rockets hold off Mavericks

Posted Sunday July 11, 2010 12:50AM

Jermaine Taylor scored 21 points as the Houston Rockets defeated the Dallas Mavericks 87-78 in the final game of Day 2 at the 2010 NBA Summer League on the campus of UNLV.

"We did what we needed to do out there to get the win," said Taylor.

"Personally, I think I could have done a little better on the defensive end, but that's what I'm here for -- to work on my game, so that's what I'm doing."

Having been down as many as 10 points, the Rockets trailed the Mavericks by one heading into the fourth quarter. In the fourth, Dallas took over, outscoring its in-state rival 26-16 and stretching its lead to as many as 11.

Omar Samhan and the Mavericks charged into the first quarter burying the Rockets in an 11-3 hole in the first four minutes of the period, and holding an eight-point lead until the last two minutes of the quarter. That was when Houston fired back, going on an 8-3 run to end the quarter down two. Samhan went 5-for-6 from the field for 10 points to lead all scorers after the first quarter.

Houston chipped away at the deficit in the second, pulling even at 21-21 in the period's opening minutes before taking the lead, its first of the game, on a Jermaine Taylor bucket with 3:50 to play in the half. Dallas went on a 6-2 run in the final 90 seconds to finish to take a 47-42 halftime lead. Samhan and Rodrigue Beaubois each finished with 14 first-half points. For Houston, Taylor's eight led the way.

In the third, the Rockets pulled even at 52-52 with 4:58 left. But Dallas went into the fourth with a one-point lead. Taylor scored 10 in the quarter, including 4-for-4 from the free-throw line.

Beaubois led all scorers with 28, while Samhan finished with 17. Dominique Jones chipped in with 10 points for Dallas. Taylor's offensive effort was complimented by Jordan Hill's 14 points and nine points from Dwight Lewis.

The Rockets return to action Sunday against the Portland Trail Blazers, while Dallas continues its Summer League schedule on Monday, July 12, against the Milwaukee Bucks.
