Red-hot Rockets stay lucky in Vegas

Posted Friday July 9, 2010 8:47PM

The Houston Rockets (1-0) began the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas just the way they've remembered it dating back to 2008 with another win. The Rockets defeated the Phoenix Suns (0-1) by a 100-88 margin for their seventh consecutive victory in the desert event. Houston improved its record in league history to 18-3 with the win.

The contest featured eight lead changes and three ties with the majority of that action taking place in a six-minute range from the end of the first half (34 seconds remaining) to the 4:35 mark of the third quarter. Houston held serve the remainder of the contest and even pushed out to a double-digit cushion with 5:51 remaining in the affair.

Houston's offense erupted in the final six minutes when they went on a 17-10 run to hit the century mark, while Phoenix could only muster three points in a four-minute portion of that stretch.

Jermaine Taylor led the Rockets offensively with game-highs in points (25) and rebounds (seven). Taylor was one of five Houston players in double-digits with Patrick Patterson (18), Jordan Hill (16), Chase Budinger (10) and Dwight Lewis (10) rounding out the quintet.

"We got the win and that's all that really matters," noted Taylor. "We all went in and played hard, we had a good few days of training camp coming in here and I think it showed. We all went out there and played as hard as we could."

Phoenix had four players score 10 or more points with Zabian Dowdell pouring in 16 scores in a losing effort. Gani Lawal and Earl Clark chipped in 14 apiece, while Matt Janning added 10 of his own.

The Rockets offense was consistent through all four quarters scoring in the 20s, while topping out at 29 in the third stanza. The Suns, on the other hand, bookended two 20-point periods with a 17-point first quarter and 13-point fourth.

Both teams are back in action Saturday, July 10 with games in the Cox Pavilion. The Suns open up the day's action with a 1:00 pm contest with the Toronto Raptors, while the Rockets play the Dallas Mavericks at 7:00 pm.
