The Golden State Warriors knocked off the New Orleans Hornets 77-76 Friday night at the 2010 NBA Summer League at UNLV's Cox Pavilion in Las Vegas. The game started slowly, but the final 7:39 was worth the price of admission, as the teams combined for seven lead changes and two ties down the stretch. New Orleans had an opportunity to claim the game, but Drew Collison missed a jumper at the buzzer.
The final 1:39 had four lead changes with Golden State securing the final lead with 38.1 seconds left. Brandon Wright hit two free throws to seal the game for the Warriors.
The Warriors' (1-0) fourth-quarter rally was sparked by seven points from Reggie Williams, who contributed a team-high 22 points.
"This is a different kind of summer league for me, because I'm under contract [with Golden State]," said Williams. "It takes a lot of pressure off and I can come in and play in a close game like this having played in some during the regular season. It's definitely a lot easier to come in and play my game."
New Orleans (0-1) fell behind early by seven, but outscored Golden State 38-24 for a seven-point halftime lead. Trailing by seven with 3:06 remaining in the first, the Hornets rattled off 11 of the game's next 17 points to pull within two heading to the second. Sean Sonderleiter pulled the game even at 20-20 just 24 seconds into the second with a jumper. New Orleans kept the pedal down and slowly built its lead up to 11 on three different occasions. But Golden State scored three unanswered baskets to head into the break down seven.
The Warriors stayed hot early in the third, pulling within 45-44. The Hornets answered with an 8-1 run to bump their lead to 53-45 with 5:15 left in the third.
Brandan Wright added 18 for Golden State, while Ben Woodside (11) and Kim Tillie (10) also finished in double digits.
New Orleans got a game-high 23 points from Marcus Thornton, who added seven boards. Quincy Pondexter was the only other Hornets player with double-digit points with 14. Kyle Hines contributed nine points and 12 rebounds.
Golden State is back in action on Saturday, July 10 with a 5:00 p.m. PT tussle with the Detroit Pistons, while New Orleans will have a day off and won't return to the Cox Pavilion until Sunday night at 7:00 p.m. PT.
