Summer League: Trail Blazers 81, Heat 55

Posted Saturday July 21, 2012 6:14PM

The Portland Trail Blazers blew away the Miami Heat by a score of 81-55 to open up the ninth day of the NBA Summer League, at Cox Pavilion on the campus of UNLV. Will Barton played all 40 minutes and finished with a game-high 27 points on 10-of-17 shooting from the field.

It was the last game on the summer slate for both Miami and Portland. Damian Lilliard, who has established himself as one of the standouts in this year's summer schedule was out of the lineup after averaging 26.5 ppg. in the first four games in Las Vegas. The Heat rested some of their supporting cast as Norris Cole and Terrel Harris looked on after putting in a solid four games work.

Barton, a second round pick out of Memphis in this year's NBA Draft scored eight first quarter points and helped Portland open up a 22-15 lead at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter Portland was able to sustain their lead as Dee Bost, who played his college ball at Mississippi State compiled nine first-half points. Bost played all 40 minutes as well and recorded 14 points and seven assists. LeMarcus Reed III, a guard out of Texas-Arlington drained a three-pointer as time expired in the first half to give Portland a 43-30 advantage going into halftime. Reed III had 14 points on 5-for-8 shooting.

Barton struck again right out of the half, opening the third quarter with a jam then following it up with a fadeaway bank shot to keep the momentum intact for Portland. They continued to pour it on offensively while limiting Miami to only 12 points in the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter, Bost found Barton for a slam that made the score 72-44. The 28-point lead was their largest lead of the contest.

Miami struggled to get anything going most of the game. The 55 points for the Heat was their lowest point total on the trip. Dexter Pittman came off the bench and compiled a team-high 13 points and five rebounds in just 20 minutes of action.

The Trail Blazers wrapped up a successful trip going 4-1. The World Champion, Heat concluded their summer schedule with a 3-2 record. Their 50-point victory over the Los Angeles Lakers was the biggest victory to record in NBA Summer League history.
