Tobias Harris sank two free throws with 5.9 seconds remaining on the clock to give his Milwaukee Bucks (3-1) an 88-87 win over the Boston Celtics (3-2) on Saturday night in 2012 NBA Summer League action from UNLV's Thomas & Mack Center. Milwaukee, which led by as much as nine points in the third quarter, had to watch as a game-winning fadeaway jumper from Boston's Jared Sullinger clanked off the back of the rim as time expired.
The game featured 19 lead changes and 12 ties with two of the former and one of the latter occurring in the final 1:19 of regulation.
After watching Boston stake itself to a three-point lead with 2:11 left in the fourth, Milwaukee rattled off a 7-3 run the remainder of the game. Doron Lamb got things started with a floating jumper at the 1:58 mark before James Hannah nailed a 3-pointer with 79 seconds left that put the Bucks ahead by two.
The Celtics' Jamar Smith countered with a 3-pointer of his won 19 seconds later to put his squad up by one. Unfortunately, Smith was the culprit that sent Harris to the line after committing the foul in the waning moments.
Boston, who called a timeout to set up a game-winning shot, inbounded the ball to Sullinger on the left side of the basket. He then moved across the lane and fired up the missed shot.
Each quarter was played to within a three-point differential by both teams. The second half produced 23 or more points for both squads in each 10-minute session.
The Bucks opened up third quarter by rattling off a 9-2 run in 2:27, which was immediately matched with a 15-5 scoring stretch that produced the first of four lead changes in the stanza.
Milwaukee carried over a one-point lead into the fourth, but could only manage as much as a four-point lead (78-74) in the final 10 minutes of action. Boston's lone four-point lead occurred at 82-78, which was quickly erased by the Bucks rally.
The Bucks' Harris and John Henson tied for the game high in points with 22 apiece. They each connected on nine field goals. Larry Sanders chipped in a double-double with 11 points and 15 rebounds.
Boston's Dionte Christmas had a team-high 17 points, which was closely followed by 16-point efforts from Smith and Sullinger, who added 11 rebounds for a double-double. Craig Brackins joined the double-digit scorers with 15 points of his own.
Milwaukee will take to the court once more with a 1:00 p.m. PT contest against the Chicago Bulls on the final day of the 2012 NBA Summer League, while Boston's run in Las Vegas concluded Saturday.
